Subject/Grade level: Math 4th grade

Unit topic (if applicable): Equivalent Fractions/Comparing Fractions
Lesson goals: The student will be able to perform the correct operation to solve equivalent fractions
and will be able to check work using the butterfly method.
Lesson title or topic: Fraction Equivalency Dominos
Estimated length of lesson: 45 minutes

TEKS Standards:

Math:

 4.3 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent
and generate fractions to solve problems.
 4.3(C) determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods

Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to find equivalent fractions using multiplication and division.
The students will be able to check their work by comparing fractions and using the butterfly method

Academic Language:

 Butterfly Method- A way to determine if the two fractions that are being used are equal. They
would need to cross multiply the fractions to check equivalency.

Grouping: There will be whole group and small group and individual grouping. For small group pairing
the students are already placed into small groups and will work with the students at their own table.

Materials:

 Graph paper
 Pencil/pen
 “Domino” cutout with fractions
 Math workbook

Resources: Pinterest-I downloaded the fractions game the students will be playing from an online
website found on Pinterest

“I do”- I will write down some fractions that the students will need to find the equivalent fractions. I will
have a couple of students come up to the board and show the class how to find the equivalent fraction.

“We do”- The students will be grouped into four groups and play a game of dominos. On the domino
pieces instead of dots to represent numbers on the pieces there will be fractions on the domino and the
students will find equivalent fractions and match them.

“You do”- The students will split up individually and complete pages in their math workbooks to assess
for comprehension.

Instructional Procedures

Introduction/ Teacher Modeling: I will begin the lesson by reviewing the methods in finding equivalent
fractions using multiplication and division. I will also review the correct way to compare the fractions to
check if the fractions are equal.

Body of the Lesson: The class will be split into four groups and play a game of fractions dominos as a
review of the topic.

Guided Practice: Before the students start playing the game I will go over the rules and how to play. I
will visually show them using some domino pieces on the overhead on how to play the game

Conclusion (closure): The students will need to go to pages 100 and 101 in their math workbook and
complete the problems on those pages individually

Assessment:

How will you assess how well the students are meeting the objectives during the lesson?

 I will be asking students to show me how they found the equivalent fractions and what number
they may have multiplied or divided by to solve the problem.

How will you assess how well the students have achieved the learning objectives?

 The students will need to go to pages 100 and 101 in their math workbook and complete the
problems on those pages individually

How will you provide feedback to support student learning?

 As the students are playing I will over tips and suggestions on how to solve the problem and
offer positive feedback when the students are doing well.

Special Needs Learners

The class is made up with the majority of them being special needs learners. The students who need it
will be able to use a multiplication chart to help them solve their problems and they will also have peer
support.
