PT PROCEDURE

1.0 PURPOSE:

This procedure is issued to provide guidelines for conducting Liquid penetrant test and
acceptance criteria.

2.0 SCOPE:
Covers penetrant test method As in E 165:
 Visible penetrant test – Water washable – Type II – Method A
 Visible penetrant test – Solvent removable - Type II – Method C
For Examination of castings & Welds.

3.0 Personnel employed shall be qualified based on recommended pr actice ASNT–SNT.TC.1A.

Personnel interpreting and evaluating results of examinat ion shall be certified to
minimum level II.

3.0 PENETRANT MATERIALS :

3.1 Penetrant materials for testing include all Penetrants, solvents or cleaning liquids&
developers.
Materials confirms to ASTM E165 or equivalent shall be used.
5.2 Control of Contaminants:
Penetrant materials shall confirm to the requirement of ASTM E165 for the limits of
sulphur and halogens.
5.3 Total Sulphur content be 0.1 % maximum and total halogen content be 0.1 %
maximum
5.4 Certification of the above shall be obtained from the manufacturer of penetrant
materials for each batch of materials being used. Records for this to be maintained.

4.0 SURFACE PREPARATION:

4.1 Surface of the part examined to be free of dirt, grease, scale, welding flux, spatter, oil
etc.
Surface preparation by grinding, machining or other methods may be necessary prior
to testing. Surface preparation using shot/sand blasting is not acceptable.
Extent of testing: When NO specific requirements given testing shall be performed to
all accessible areas of the part. Plate material shall be tested to all major surfaces
except edges.

6.2 Pre cleaning:

Parts shall be thoroughly cleaned using cleaner and allowed to dry mi nimum 5 minutes
prior to application of penetrant.
Drying may be accomplished by normal evaporation or by forced air.

5.0 METHOD OF APPLYING P ENETRANT:

5.1 For solvent removable, and water washable method :

5.1.1 Penetrant may be applied by any suitable means such as dipping, spraying,
Brushing and flowing.
5.1.2 Penetrant shall be wet during complete dwell time.
5.1.3 Minimum Penetrant dwell time shall be 15 minutes.
5.1.4 After application of Penetrant, allow excess Penetrant to drain from the part. Care
should be taken to preven t pools of Penetrant from forming on the examination
Surface.

6.0 METHOD OF REMOVING EXCESS PENETRANT:

6.1 After the specified penetrant dwell time has elapsed, any penetrant remaining on the
surface shall be removed using obsorbant cloth or paper.
6.2 For solvent removable penetrant, cloth damped with cleaner / remover shall be used to
remove excess penetrant.
6.3 For water washable penetrant,a coarse spray of water with less than 40Psi shall be used
to remove excess penetrant. Temperature of wash water b e within 10°C to 38°C.
6.4 Ensure that the rinsing is not vigorous and shall not remove the penetrant from the
discontinuity.
6.5 Parts are to be dried properly prior to application of developer. Drying can be
accomplished by normal evaporation or hot air circula tion.
When using hot air circulation, ensure p arts are not heated more than 52° C

7.0 METHOD OF APPLYING D EVELOPER:

7.1 Wet non aqueous developer shall be used

7.2 For penetrant examination developer application by spraying as to form a thin coating
on the surface. Developer shall be agitated to ensure proper suspension. Drying shall
be by normal evaporation.

PT PROCEDURE

8.0 INTERPRETATION:

8.1 Interpretation and evaluation has to be effected 10 minutes after the application of
developer, and maximum being 30 minutes.
8.2 For visible dye penetrant examination the minimum light intensity required on the test
surface shall be 1000 lux.
8.3 Record all relevant indication and their location as sketch or may be recorded as
photographs.
Linear Indication
Indication one with length in excess of 3 times the width.

Rounded indication
Indication those which are not defined as linear

8.4 Acceptance criteria

Only indications with major dimensions greater than 1/16 in (1.5mm) shall be considered relevant.

Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-examined to determine whether or not they are
relevant.

All surfaces to be examined shall be free of:

(a) relevant linear indications;

(b) relevant rounded indications greater than 3/16 in (5 mm)
(c) four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 1/16 in (1.5mm) or less (edge to
edge)

11.0 Post cleaning: Clean the part completely using dry cloth, air and cleaner.
