Summary

An IP address is a unique address used to identify a machine on a network. Every device that is using
or connecting to the internet must have an IP address to pursue communication with other devices.
Different devices like routers, switches, desktop, laptops, tablets, mobile phones each have IP
address while connected on a specific network. IP address acts as a mail address or telephone
number of a machine to show ownership and location. It allows a device to communicate and be
located on the cloud or the whole web. There are two types of IP addressing that supports this
labelling method of machines: Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6
(IPv6).

Internet Protocol version 4 sure is a great technology but it has constraints. Specifically, its future
exhaustion worldwide. That’s why a lot of technologies are used to prevent this and make a solution
regarding IPv4 exhaustion.

One of the solutions is of course what we all know as Network Address Translation (NAT) but this is
not a permanent solution. Another version of Internet Protocol is developed, IPv6. It is the latest
version of Internet Protocol that is developed to address the constraints of IPv4.

In this project, we will see how to design XYZ Company’s network architecture properly using both
IPv4 and IPv6 addressing with the help of physical and logical network diagrams.

1. Introduction
XYZ Corporation, a biomedical private software development organization, as part of its going
improvements to its network architecture and infrastructure, has decided to let the company
transition the organization’s network from Class C 192.168.1.0 IP address format to Class B
191.2.78.0 network design and also upgrade its network devices to newer models. This includes,
network switches, routers, file servers, centralized printers, etc. The network consultant, should
identify services, equipment, process, existing design, scope and the right cost estimates.

The network design will depend on the number of the clients in each branch. Headquarter has 786
employees, branch A has 78 and branch B has 76. The organization also decided to have file servers
and web servers to cater different roles and services for both employees and customers.

2. Organisational Description
XYZ Corporation is one of the leading private biomedical software development company in the Gold
Coast region. Custom biomedical software applications have great considerations that require high-
level of expertise when it includes HIPAA compliance and FDA approval. The organization has
worked with different clients at different stages of their biomedical development software process.
It also includes taking over a project where the previous creator or developer is no longer present.

3. Address Design for Subnets

3.1 IP subnetting in IPv4
The new IP addressing plan for IPv4 is done thru the use of Variable Length Subnet Masking
(VLSM). The method provides new address depending on the number of hosts required in
each Local Area Network (LAN) of the organization.

3.1.1 IPv4 allocation plan for Head Quarter

Network No. of First Usable IP Last Usable IP Broadcast Default
Address Subnet Mask Hosts Address Address Address Gateway
191.2.78.0 255.255.252.0 786 191.2.78.1 191.2.81.254 191.2.81.255 191.2.78.1

3.1.2 IPv4 allocation plan for Branch A

Network No. of First Usable IP Last Usable IP Broadcast Default

3.1.3 IPv4 allocation plan for Branch B

Network No. of First Usable IP Last Usable IP Broadcast Default

3.2 IP addressing plan for IPv6
In this section, the IPv6 allocation for each branch are listed for future-ready set-up
whenever the organization decided to migrate to IPv6 format.

4. Complete Diagram including IP address subnetting
Below are the diagrams for the organization, you can have brief diagram here with more information
about each subnet in Appendixes.

4. Conclusion

New IP addressing always happen with organizations, giving a better architecture but also gives a lot
of issue in implementation. Network analysts use VLSM or Variable Length Subnet Masking to properly
allocate IP addresses in an organization. This is the best method for this project because wastage of
IP addresses is never a best practice in every industry and organization.
