Classroom Management In-Class Activity

Part I: Pre-Assessment:
1. What is your definition of Classroom Management?
- Classroom Management can be defined as the ways in which the educational
environment is monitored and controlled.
2. What is the difference between Classroom Rules and Routines &
Procedures? Use examples from your classroom experiences to support your
answer.
- Rules are the expectations and requirements of students during class such as “don’t cause
problems,” however routines and procedures are the regular happenings in class such as
lining up for lunch at 12:00pm.
3. Describe: From your own Field Observations, state the grade level for an
elementary class and the subject being taught for a middle or high school
class:
a. 3 classroom rules – be specific according to what behavior they are
addressing
- Rule 1: Always be KIND and work HARD.
- Subject: Science
- Grade: 12
- Addresses the expectation that students should display kindness to each other and
put forth effort in the classroom.
- Rule 2: Raise your hand calmly and quietly
- Subject: Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies
- Grade: 3
- Addresses how students are expected to raise their hand and that it will be
executed in a way to cause minimal distractions.
- Rule 3: Keep phones away unless given permission by Ms. Palmer
- Subject: English
- Grade: 10 & 12
- Addresses the issue of phones in the class and gives the expectation that there is
little/no tolerance for phones and other distractions.
b. 3 routines & procedures in detail. (Examples: arriving in the morning,
dismissal, assemblies, lunch, quiz taking, homework policy)
- Routine & Procedure 1: Binder checks will be done at the end of each unit
- Subject: Science

- Grade: 12
- Students are expected to hold all of their resources in one binder in an organized
way. These binders will later be graded for points to end each unit.
- Routine & Procedure 2: To travel to every special, line up in an orderly fashion with the
line leader at the beginning and caboose at the back.
- Subject: Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies
- Grade: 3
- Students are expected to be calm and mature by lining up in a way that causes
little distractions for others while limiting the amount of issues that may occur.
- Routine & Procedure 3: Begin the class period with journals
- Subject: English
- Grade: 10 & 12
- Students are expected to respond to the daily journal prompt in a timely and
accurate fashion.
4. Name and describe 3 School Rules that are derived from the Principal and
School Building itself. (Examples: No smoking on campus) How do these
rules impact your individual classroom?
- School Rule 1: “Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated”
- This rule changes the expectations of the class as bullying and other forms of
harassment will not be accepted by the school.
- School Rule 2: “No disrespecting school officials and administrators”
- This rule changes the expectations of the classroom as all parties are expected to
treated higher powers with respect.
- School Rule 3: “No tobacco on campus
- This rule changes the expectation of items brought into the classroom and used by
students, teachers, and others.
5. Opinion: Do you think that rules stemming from the Administration are
more effectively enforced than rules developed in the classroom by the
teacher and their students? What can be some of the benefits or drawbacks
of having different school wide rules versus classroom rules?
- Personally, I believe that the rules stemming from the Administration are less enforced
than the rules in the classroom. I believe this, because the teachers have direct access to
the students while the administration doesn’t. Additionally, some drawbacks to different
rules include confusion of the expectations of students. This may also lead to problems
among the community as guardians may not understand the punishments and policies for
the students.

What is your definition of ‘discipline’? From your own experiences do you

agree with Harry Wong’s view of Discipline and Procedure? Explain your
reasoning.
- In this video, discipline is defined as the behavior, and personally I would have to agree. I
think that discipline is completely unnecessary in the classroom where teachers are
performing to the best ability. Furthermore, if the students are completely engaged due to
the teacher’s successful methods, there will be no need to act on student’s behavior.
2. Chicago Public Schools (CPS): Positive Behavior Supports in Chicago's
Schools, Kelly HS and Dawes Elementary School, May 23, 2013 (11:36)

Do you think that implementing the peer intervention committee
demonstrates an effective way to help students conform to the rules? What
are some positive results? What can be some pitfalls in using this practice?
- I think that peer intervention committee demonstrates an effective way for students to be
held accountable and to conform to the rules. I think that this method forces students to
understand possible consequences that they might not normally consider. However, I
think that this practice can be negative in some environments that can’t afford to have
students consistently being monitored with teachers away from the classrooms.
3. The CHAMPS acronym stands for Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement,
Participation and Success. Houston ISD, CHAMPS:

From watching the video, do you believe the CHAMPS method appears to be
effective in all school settings? Provide examples from the video to support
your answer.
- I think that the CHAMPS method is very effective in all class settings. In the video it was
noted that students could more easily understand the rules as they were consistent and
equal between every class. I think that this method is extremely important as it eliminates
any inconsistencies within education and in schools.
