Chapter 10:

10.1) Dividing the systems engineering process into stages has the advantage of making the
process easier to identify the problem, develop the product and finally figure out the appropriate
way to execute the design.

10.2) In the technical feasibility stage one should study the feasibility of the design and make
sure that there are no technical or economic barriers to implementation that can’t be overcome by
development.

10.3) Configuration control system is necessary to establish and maintain consistency of systems
or products. This system is necessary to maintain its functional and physical attributes with its
required design and operational information throughout its life. It is necessary to improve and
modify the current system to or to achieve higher standards for specific products.

10.4) For the state department of environmental protection projects, after the project is identified
the project details is handed to a consultant firm to perform the design then the design goes to the
bureau of engineering design and construction for the design reviewing process once the design
got approved the drawing release process takes place by handing the drawings to the appropriate
construction division.

10.5) Johnson and Johnson withdraw their profitable product from retail shelves on learning that
poison had been inserted in some bottles of product. Liability problems reported prudently and
rapidly, that also destroy large companies. Liability awards reach unreasonable levels and the
implications of excessive awards pervade American society.

10.6) Potential solutions to liability includes:

The company should be honest enough about their products and include warnings on
the product showing the defects or the possible problems their product might cause.
Safety should be a company’s primary concern in designing their products.
They have to use standard, proven materials and components.
They have to employ design review process.
They have to assure an effective, independent quality control and inspection process.

10.8) Watch industry in Switzerland is so reliable, and Switzerland is well known worldwide for
its good watch, and hence just a Swiss-made stamp on the watch’s back will guarantee it for life.

10.9) Assume that three components of product are

Case 1: Three are in series, Rt = 0.9*0.9*0.9 = 0.729
Case 2: Three are in parallel, Rt = 1-[(1-0.9)*(1-0.9)*(1-0.9)] = 0.999
Case 3 : Series in parallel, Rt = 0.9-[(1-0.81)*(1-0.81)] = 0.863
Case 4 : Parallel in series, Rt= 0.9-[(1-(1-0.9)*(1-0.9))*(1-(1-0.9)*(1-0.9))] = 0.9801

10.10) Case 1: probability= 0.95*0.98=0.931

Case 2: probability=1-((1-0.98)*(1-0.95))=0.9985

10.15) In food industry Dairymilk chocolates are well known. Before few years, from some
chocolates harmful germs were found. Test and inspections prove that those germs are
harmful for humans. So chocolate company took all stock back from market and after
investigation, they found something wrong in their packing which allows germs to enter in
chocolates. After that report they redesign their packing styles and pattern and launch
product in markets. Once again they get satisfaction from their customers and they get
success when they provide product with a greater value.
