83. “Ease of Living Index” rankings launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
(MoHUA). Ease of Living Index is a transformative initiative of the Ministry to help the cities assess
their liveability vis-à-vis national and global benchmarks.
84. Blue-collar workers perform labor jobs and typically work with their hands. The skills
necessary for blue-collar work vary by occupation.
White-collar workers usually perform job duties in an office setting. They are highly skilled and
formally trained professionals.
85. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement adopted at the
Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1992. It has three main objectives:
to conserve biological diversity
to use its components in a sustainable way
to share fairly and equitably the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
The CBD was negotiated under the guidance of the United Nations.
87. Invest India, set up in 2009, is a non-profit venture under the Department for Promotion of
Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
As the national investment promotion and facilitation agency, Invest India focuses on sector-specific
investor targeting and development of new partnerships to enable sustainable investments in India.
Invest India also actively works with several Indian states to build capacity as well as bring in global

88. The Delhi government has recently launched E-Abhilekh website-a first of its kind in India. The

90. Trans-fat, also called unsaturated fatty acids or trans fatty acids, is a type of unsaturated fat. Fats
contain long hydrocarbon chains, which can be either unsaturated, i.e., have double bonds, or
saturated, i.e., have no double bonds.
Trans fats occur naturally in meat and dairy products from ruminants. It became widely produced
industrially from vegetable fats starting in the 1950s for use in margarine, snack food, packaged
baked goods, and for frying fast food.
91. In 1996, the Supreme Court directed the government to establish the National Blood
Transfusion Council (NBTC) and State Blood Transfusion Councils (SBTCs). The NBTC functions
as the apex policy-formulating and expert body for blood transfusion services and includes
representation from blood banks.
Blood is considered to be a ‘drug’ under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940. Therefore, just like any
other manufacturer or storer of drugs, blood banks need to be licensed by the Drug Controller-
General of India (DCGI).
92. Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana or Saubhagya Scheme was launched in 2017. It
aims to achieve universal household electrification in India. It seeks to provide last mile
connectivity and electricity connections to all un-electrified households in rural areas and poor un-
electrified households in urban areas. Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has been designated
as the nodal agency for implementation of the scheme.
93. The NBWL has been constituted under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972- an act to provide for the
protection of wild animals. NBWL advices the government on policy and strategy for wildlife
conservation. It also reviews proposals for non-forestry use of forestland within National Parks and
Wildlife Sanctuaries, and issue or deny permissions.
The NBWL is chaired by the Prime Minister. It also comprises of a Standing Committee, headed by
Union Environment Minister.
94. The legislative procedure states that a Bill which is pending in the Rajya Sabha, after being passed
by the Lok Sabha, will lapse on the dissolution of Lok Sabha. But if the Bill was introduced in the Rajya
Sabha, the dissolution of Lok Sabha will not lead to its lapse.
Recently, The Citizenship (amendment) Bill and The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on
Marriage) Bill, 2018 lapsed as they could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha since both the houses were
adjourned sine die (house is dismissed for an indefinite period)
95. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (abbreviated NSCN) is a Naga nationalist insurgent
group operating mainly in Northeast India, with minor activities in northwest Myanmar. It is
operating in Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Naga Peace Accord was signed between the Government of India and the Naga armed groups
headed by the NSCN-IM in 2015. The accord seeks to end the Naga insurgency.
96. Odisha Chief Minister has laid the foundation stone for the Subarnarekha Port. The port will be
developed at Subarnarekha River’s mouth at Chaumukh, Balasore district, Odisha. It will be
developed as an all-weather, deep-draft seaport to host large and heavily loaded ships
The proposed port will be developed by Tata Steel and Creative Port Development Pvt. Ltd.
The benefits of the port are: a) help accelerate industrialisation in Odisha and boost its economic
growth, b) will serve industries in Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and trans-
border countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and others in South East Asia and c) generate employment
opportunities.
97. An Expert Committee on Determining the Methodology for Fixation of the National Minimum
Wage, headed by Anoop Satpathy, has recommended setting the minimum wage at Rs 375 a day or
Rs. 9,750 per month. The minimum wage has been fixed irrespective of sectors, skills, occupations and
rural-urban locations for a family.
98. The National Commission for Minorities has constituted a new sub-committee. The committee is
entrusted with the task of preparing a report to provide a) comprehensive definition of minority and
b) criteria for determining minority status of a community. The National Commission for Minorities
(NCM) is a statutory body established under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. It
functions to safeguard the rights and interests of minority communities in India.
The constitution of the sub-committee comes in the backdrop of recent Supreme Court direction to
NCM on defining minority in the context of state-wise population of a community.
The direction came over a plea seeking minority status for Hindus in 7 states and 1 UT. According to
2011 census, the Hindus are minority in Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Jammu and
Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Punjab.
At present, minority status is granted to Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Parsis and Jains.
99. Wholesale Price Index is computed by Office of the Economic Advisor(OEA), Department of

Consumer price index (Rural and Urban) is released by Central Statistical Organisation
According to government data, wholesale inflation declined to 2.76% in January 2019. The decline has
been attributed to cheaper fuel prices.
100. The 5th International Dam Safety Conference–2019 is being held in Bhubaneswar as a joint
initiative of the Government of India, Government of Odisha and the World Bank under aegis of the
ongoing World Bank assisted Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) as a part of
institutional strengthening.
Globally India ranks third after China and the USA in terms of the number of large dams with 5264
large dams in operation and 437 large dams under construction.
101. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN) will be formally launched on 24th
February in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was announced in the interim Budget 2019-20.
Under the scheme, a direct income support of Rs 6,000/annum will be provided to small and
marginalised farmers. The financial assistance will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of the
beneficiary in 3 equal instalments
The government has defined a small and marginal landholder family as the one comprising of
husband, wife and minor children up to 18 years of age, who collectively own cultivable land up to 2
hectare as per the land records of the concerned states
102. Trans-fat are made by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid. It is
used to increase the shelf life of foods. FSSAI- the regulatory body for food safety and quality in India-
had launched “Heart Attack Rewind”, a mass media campaign. It calls for eliminating industrially-
produced trans-fat in the food supply. The FSSAI has set a target of less than 2% TFA content by 2022
in India.
103. The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) is a U.S. trade program designed to promote
economic growth in the developing world by providing preferential duty-free entry for up to 4,800
products from 129 designated beneficiary countries and territories. GSP was instituted on January 1,
1976, by the Trade Act of 1974. India was the largest beneficiary in 2016.
104. National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) is a statutory Board constituted on 22nd September 2003
under Section 5 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The NBWL is chaired by the Hon’ble Prime
Minister. The NBWL has 47 members including the Chairman. It is responsible for promotion of
conservation and development of wildlife and forests.
105. The index basket of the WPI covers commodities falling under the three major groups namely
Primary Articles, Fuel and Power and Manufactured products. It is important to note that WPI does

108. The Finance Commission is a constitutional body appointed every five years by president
and consists of a chairman and four other members.15th finance commission is setup under the
chairmanship of NK Singh to advise on the basis of Terms of reference (TOR).
The 15th Finance Commission (FC) will be using data from 2011 census for the devolution of taxes.
Few states have expressed concern over the decision as it would result in lower resource allocation.
14th Finance commission had used 1971 Census formula which was given 17% weight i.e. more
populous state will get more funds. While, 15th FC will use the 2011 Census data. Since, Southern
states have reduced their fertility rate between 1971 to 2011, whereas Northern states could not
achieve it. So, southern states fear they will get proportionately less funds, if 2011 Census is used.
109. The International Court of Justice was established in 1945 at Hague, Netherlands. It is
composed of 15 judges elected to nine-year terms of office by the United Nations General
Assembly and the Security Council. Its objective is to settle legal disputes submitted to it by
(a)states (b) duly authorized international branches and (c) UN General Assembly.
110. The blackbuck, an antelope, was notified as the state animal of Punjab in 1989. In Punjab, it is
only found in Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary. This is because semi-arid plains consisting agricultural
fields, intermittent fallow lands, scattered sand dunes, sand mounds and ridges provide suitable
habitat for the animal.
The hunting of blackbuck is prohibited in India under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act,
1972.

a gene called PCSK9,
The PCSK9 are a new class of injectable drugs that reportedly reduce ‘bad’ cholesterol levels by up
to 60% when combined with a statin (another class of drugs prescribed to help lower cholesterol
levels).
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is considered the ‘bad’ variant of cholesterol as it contributes
to plaque deposition, leading to the hardening and narrowing of arteries or ‘atherosclerosis’
(thickening of artery walls owing to accumulation of white blood cells).

115. Indian Air Force demonstrated its full combat and fire capabilities during ‘Exercise Vayu Shakti-
2019’ in the Pokharan firing range close to Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan.
Exercise Vayu Shakti is conducted once in three years which is participated by fighters, helicopters,
force enablers and support systems.
The aim of the exercise is to detect and identify targets and neutralise them in day, dusk and night
capability demonstrations.
Vayu Shakti and Gagan Shakti are the two important exercised conducted by Indian Air Force. Gagan
Shakti is the biggest military exercise undertaken by India to showcase its strength over the entire
Indian Ocean region.
116. DRDO was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the then already functioning Technical
Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development
& Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
DRDO is India’s premier organization established for research related to country’s defence

According to 2019 report. The global economy will continue to grow at a steady pace of around 3 per
cent in 2019 and 2020. In many developed countries, growth rates have risen close to their potential,
while unemployment rates have dropped to historical lows, also several large developing countries
saw a decline in per capita income in 2018. Among the developing economies, the East and South Asia
regions show relatively strong growth trajectory.

120. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued draft guidlines on
uniform health insurance product, to be called a standard Mediclaim Policy offering basic cover by all
insurers including general and health insurance businesses.
The minimum basic sum insured under the standard product shall be Rs 50,000, with a maximum
limit of Rs 10 lakh. The product would have lifelong renewability option for those in the age group of
18 and 65. Dependents and children will be covered up to 25 years.
The proposed product will cover hospitalisation expenses, including intensive care unit, dental
treatment,domiciliary hospitalisation among others.Further, expenses incurred on treatment under
Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy will also be covered.

During the 5th meeting of Island development agency, Four islands in the Andamans and three in
Lakshadweep have been identified for seaplane operations, while private sector participation has been
invited for tourism based projects.
These islands are Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Hutbay and Long in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
and Kavaratti, Agatti and Minicoy in Lakshadweep have been identified for seaplane operations.
122. Mid-Day Meal Scheme is a centrally-sponsored Scheme that provides children studying in
Classes I-VIII of government and government aided schools with cooked mid day meal. The key
objectives of the MDMS is to a) improve the nutritional status of children and b) improve enrolment,
attendance and retention rates in schools and EGS/AIE centres ( Alternative and Innovative
Education Centers )
123. Government has cleared the National Policy on Electronics 2019. It envisions positioning India as
a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing.
The government ended modified special incentive scheme (M-SIPS) of national electronic policy, 2012

It has proposed a sovereign patent fund to acquire intellectual property for chips and chip
components. It formulates joint strategy and action plan along with Industry, Academia and R&D
Organizations to identify core technologies and develop IPs and make them available to the Industry.
124. The Regional Maritime Safety Conference 2019, being organized by India for the first time began
in Mumbai.
It is organized by the National Maritime Foundation (NMF), in coordination with Ministry of
Shipping and Ministry of External Affairs.
The two-day conference will deliberate on issues related to assuring maritime safety in the India-
ASEAN sub-region, safeguarding our shores and promoting maritime trade.
125. Iran has unveiled a “state-of-the-art” domestically produced submarine capable of firing cruise
missiles. It is Iran’s first submarine in the semi-heavy category.
Since 1992, Iran has developed a homegrown defense industry that produces light and heavy weapons
ranging from mortars and torpedoes to tanks and submarines.
126. Green crackers are so named because they do not contain harmful chemicals that would cause
air pollution. In green crackers the commonly used polluting chemicals like aluminium, barium,
potassium nitrate and carbon have either been removed or sharply reduced to slow down the
emissions by 15 to 30%.
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) scientists has developed less polluting green
firecrackers named as (a) Safe Water Releaser (SWAS) (b) Safe Thermite Cracker (STAR) and (c) Safe
Minimal Aluminium (SAFAL).
127. SWAYATT stands for Start-ups, Women and Youth Advantage Through eTransactions on
Government e Marketplace (GeM). It is an initiative to promote MSMEs, women and young
entrepreneurs through e-transactions on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
It was launched by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This will bring together the key
stakeholders within the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem to Government e-Marketplace, the national
procurement portal.
128. The LCA Tejas is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multi-role light fighter. Its design is
highly manoeuvrable, with a tailless, compound delta wing configuration.
It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India’s
ageing MiG-21 fighters. Later, the LCA was officially named “Tejas”, meaning “Radiant” by the then
Prime Minister. It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary supersonic combat aircraft.

129. The United Nations Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) is a proposed
treaty which intends to criminalize all forms of international terrorism and deny terrorists, their
financiers and supporters’ access to funds, arms, and safe havens. The CCIT was proposed by India
in 1996. Currently, the negotiations are going on and deadlocked mainly because of differences over
the definition of terrorism.
130. Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is the national regulatory body for
pharmaceuticals and medical devices in India.
Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) is an organ of the CDSCO which is responsible for approving
and licensing of drugs and medical devices in India. The DCGI is advised by the Drug Technical
Advisory Board (DTAB) and the Drug Consultative Committee (DCC). It is divided into zonal offices
which do pre-licensing and post-licensing inspections, post-market surveillance, and recalls when
needed.
131. India has ranked 67 out of 199 countries in the 2019 Passport Index. In 2015, India had ranked 77.
25 countries offer visa-free entry to Indians, 39 countries offer visa on arrival. Indian tourists still need

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is the regional intergovernmental

The Passport Index has been released by passport index.org. The rankings are based on country’s

132. The gurdwara in Kartarpur stands on the bank of River Ravi, about 120 km northeast of
Lahore.It is revered as Guru Nanak’s final resting place.
The Kartarpur Corridor is a 4km long proposed corridor comprising border gates, road and a bridge
to link Dera Baba Nanak gurdwara in Gurdaspur district in India to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib
Kartarpur in Pakistan. It is aimed at allowing the easy movement of Sikh pilgrims to the Kartarpur
gurdwara.

The Indian Armed Forces are currently equipped with INSAS (Indian National Small Arms System)
Rifle. There is an urgent requirement of replacing the in-service INSAS Rifle with an Assault Rifle
which is compact, robust and modern in technology.
139. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) was launched in 2015. It seeks to extend affordable
credit to micro and small enterprises. Loans up to Rs.10 lakh are extended to non-corporate, non-farm
enterprises. These loans are classified as MUDRA loans.
The loans are extended by the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA) through
last mile financial institutions such as Commercial Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Small Finance Banks,
Cooperative Banks, Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) and Non-Banking Financial Companies
(NBFCs). MUDRA is an NBFC supporting development of micro enterprise sector in India.
Under PMMY, MUDRA has created three different interventions ‘Shishu’, ‘Kishor’ and ‘Tarun’. These
signify the stage of growth or development and funding needs of the beneficiary.
140. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an inter-governmental body established in 1989 on the
initiative of the G7. It is a “policy-making body” which works to generate the necessary political will
to bring about national legislative and regulatory reforms in various areas. The FATF Secretariat is
housed at the OECD headquarters in Paris.
The objectives of the FATF are to (a) set standards and promote effective implementation of legal,
regulatory and operational measures (b) for combating money laundering (c)terrorist financing and
(d) other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system

moon. If the landing is successful, Israel will become the fourth nation to soft land on moon after the
former Soviet Union (Luna 2, 1959), the USA (Ranger 4, 1962) and China (Chang’e 4, 2018)
Beresheet was flown by Space X’s falcon 9 Rocket. It was lifted from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.
Israel’s lunar mission is by Space IL, Israel- a non-profit organisation- and Israel Aerospace Industry
(IAI).
143. Wallace’s giant bee- the world’s largest bee- has been rediscovered in a remote part of Indonesia.
The bee lives in the Indonesian island region of North Moluccas. The bee has been spotted for the first
time in almost 40 years
The Wallace bee was discovered in the 19th century by British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. It was
nicknamed as the “flying bulldog”.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the bee as “vulnerable”. Though the population of the
bee is relatively high, the remoteness of its population makes it hard to study.
144. The Indian Prime Minister has launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)
from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was announced in the interim Budget 2019-20.
The PM Kisan scheme seeks to a) provide assured supplemental income to the most vulnerable
farmer families, b) meet farmers’ emergent needs especially before the harvest season
Under this programme, small and marginal farmer families, having cultivable land up to 2 hectares,
will be provided direct income support at the rate of Rs. 6,000 per year. The amount will be
transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiaries in 3 equal instalments.
145. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the National Action Plan – Viral
Hepatitis. Technical Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management of Hepatitis B was also released.
The Action Plan provides a strategic framework, based on which National Viral Hepatitis Control
Program was framed and launched in 2018. According to the action plan, one model hepatitis
treatment centre will be established in each State in a government institution in the first year and
model centres will be increased gradually.
National Viral Hepatitis Control Program aims to combat hepatitis and achieve goal of countrywide
elimination of Hepatitis C by 2030. It also seeks to achieve significant reduction in the infected
population, morbidity and mortality associated with Hepatitis B and C, A and E.
146. National Pension System (NPS) is a government-sponsored pension scheme. It was launched in
2004 for government employees. However, in 2009, it was opened to all sections. It is regulated by
PFRDA
Pension fund regulatory and Development Authority(PFRDA) is planning on a minimum assured
return scheme (MARS) for the subscribers of its flagship social security programme, National
Pension System(NPS).
Currently, returns on the National Pension System (NPS) are linked to the returns of the underlying
instruments such as equity, debt or a mix of both. And if the minimum assured return
scheme(MARS) scheme comes into play under the NPS, then subscribers will be assured of a
minimum return over a specified period. And any lag in the return will be compensated by the
sponsor of the scheme.
147. The Seoul Peace Prize was established in 1990 as a biennial recognition to commemorate the
success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul. The award was established to crystalize Korean
people’s yearning for peace on the Korean peninsula and in the rest of the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has donated the prize amount received as part of Seoul Peace Prize
to Namami Gange Fund. Prime Minister Modi, is the 14th recipient of the award, first for an
Indian. He has been awarded the prize in recognition of his service to international cooperation,
global growth and human development.
148. Bandipur National Park established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national
park located in Karnataka. According to the latest tiger census, Karnataka has the highest tiger
population in India.
The Bandipur Tiger Reserve along with the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and others are part of
Nilgiri Biosphere and form one of India’s ecologically diverse regions.
A major fire broke out in Bandipur Tiger Reserve which has now spread to Wayanad wildlife
sanctuary destroying acres of forest land.
149. The National Registry of Sex Offenders is maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau
(NCRB). NCRB was set-up in 1986 to function as a repository of information on crime and
criminals.
The records in the registry are sourced from the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and
Systems (CCTNS). CCTNS is a programme of Ministry of Home Affairs. It seeks to a) deliver
various web based police related services to citizens, b) facilitate a Pan-India search of crime and
criminal records of individuals through a national database, c) generate crime and criminal reports
at the state and central level to inform policy interventions d) computerise police processes and e)
establish a basic platform for an Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).
India is among few countries like the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New
Zealand, South Africa, and Trinidad & Tobago, that maintains a sex offenders list. However, the
United States is the only country where the sex offender registry is available to the public.
150. The 2019 edition of the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index has ranked Spain as the world’s
healthiest country, followed by Italy, Iceland and Switzerland, Sweden, Australia, Singapore and
Norway. These are also the countries with universal healthcare where over 70% of healthcare
spending is done by the government. Cuba (30) is the only country not classified as “high income”
by the World Bank to be ranked that high India ranked 120 compared to 119 in the 2017 ranking.
Pakistan (124), Myanmar (129) and Afghanistan (153) are the only countries in the Asian region with
a lower ranking than India.
151. El Niño means The Little Boy, or Christ Child in Spanish. It refers to the large-scale ocean-
atmosphere climate interaction linked to a periodic warming in sea surface temperatures across the
central and east-central Equatorial Pacific. El Niño events occur roughly every two to seven year.
A strong El Nino results in reduction and uneven distribution of rainfall across the Indian sub-
continent. This is because the trade winds coming from South America which normally blow
westward towards Asia during Southwest Monsoon gets weakened due to the warming of the
Pacific Ocean. Therefore, moisture and heat content gets limited and this leads to poor rainfall in
the region.

155. Employee State Insurance scheme is an integrated measure of social Insurance embodied in
the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948. The ESI Corporation extends health insurance and
medical services to all those establishments which have 20 or more workers and all those
employees whose monthly wages are up to Rs 21,000.
The EPFO covers all those firms that have 20 or more employees. Workers whose basic wages are
up to Rs 15,000 per month at the time of joining the job are mandatorily covered under the scheme.
156. India successfully test-fired two indigenously developed Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air missiles
(QR-SAM) from a test range off the Odisha coast. The QR-SAM weapon system has been jointly
developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics
Ltd. It is a quick reaction, all-weather, network-centric missile system capable of search-on-the-move.
It is a truck-mounted missile with a 360° rotatable, electro-mechanically operated, turret-based launch
unit.

of bombs and missiles on its nine hard points.Apart from India, Dassault sold the Mirage 2000 to 8

The Mirage-2000 can carry out precision strikes during day and night and had played a decisive role

158. The President of India has presented the Gandhi Peace Prize for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and

jointly to the Akshaya Patra Foundation and the Sulabh International for 2016; c) to the Ekal Abhiyan
Trust for 2017; and d) to Shri Yohei Sasakawa (from Japan) for 2018.
Vivekananda Kendra, a Spiritual Oriented Service Organization, has been awarded for its contribution
in promoting self-help, sustainability and development throughout India, especially in tribal areas.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO for children, has been awarded for efforts in advancing
education and cognition by working to remove hunger and enhance nutrition.
Gandhi Peace Prize for Social, Economic and Political transformation through Non-violence is an
annual award instituted in the year 1995. The award is dedicated to the ideals and principles of peace
and harmony propagated by the Mahatma Gandhi.
159. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955. Legal provisions relating to
acquisition and termination of citizenship of India are contained in the Citizenship Act, 1955
The bill seeks to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians
from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for Indian citizenship. The Bill also seeks to
reduce the requirement of 11 years of continuous stay in the country to six years to obtain citizenship
by naturalisation. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in January 2019. However, the bill lapsed as
it could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha
160. Statements 1 is Incorrect – ECB can be raised in Indian Rupees (INR) and / or any convertible
currency. Any entity raising INR denominated ECB is not permitted to convert the liability arising out
of this ECB into foreign currency liability in any manner or assuming foreign currency risk is any
manner by either entering into a derivative contract or otherwise.
Statements 2 is Incorrect – In a bid to improve ease of doing business, the Reserve Bank of India has
decided to liberalise external commercial borrowing (ECB) norms, allowing all companies that are
eligible for receiving foreign direct investment, to raise funds through the ECB route. The list of
eligible borrowers has been expanded. All entities eligible to receive foreign direct investment can
borrow under the ECB framework. The new framework takes immediate effect as per RBI Statement.
It has now been decided, in consultation with the Government of India, to rationalise the extant
framework for ECB and Rupee denominated bonds to further improve the ease of doing business, the
RBI said.
Statements 3 is Incorrect -The RBI has decided to keep the minimum average maturity period at 3
years for all ECBs, irrespective of the amount of borrowing, except for borrowers specifically
permitted to borrow for a shorter period. Earlier, the minimum average maturity period was five
years. The ceiling for borrowing remains at $750 million.
161. Angkor is located in Cambodia’s northern province of Siem Reap. It was the capital of the
Khmer Kingdom. The Khmer empire was a powerful state in South East Asia, lasting from 802 CE to
1431 CE. It was a Hindu-Buddhist empire.
Two important monuments in Angkor are a) Angkor Wat, a temple complex built by King
Suryavarman II and b) Angkor Thom, a temple complex built by King Jayavarman VII. Angkor is an
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
162. KALIA scheme is a package for farmer’s welfare. KALIA stands for “Krushak Assistance for
Livelihood and Income Augmentation”. The scheme has been launched by Odisha Government to
accelerate Agricultural Prosperity and reduce poverty in the State. The scheme is being implemented
from Rabi Season 2018-19 onwards.
Under the scheme, financial assistance of Rs. 25,000 per farm family over five seasons will be provided
to small and marginal farmers so that farmers can purchase inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides
and use assistance towards labour and other investments.
163. The Centre has announced the creation of a separate railway zone in Andhra Pradesh. The new
zone would be named South Coast Railway (SCoR). The headquarters of the new zone will be in
Vishakhapatnam.
The new zone would comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions. Additionally,
the Waltair division would be bifurcated. At present, Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal divisions are
in the South Central Railway and Waltair division is in the East Coast Railway. At present, there are
16 railway zones in India.
164. As part of their defence cooperation,India and Bangladesh will be conducting a joint military
exercise “Exercise Sampriti’ at Tangail, Bangladesh. This will be the eighth edition of the exercise
which is hosted alternately by both countries.
The exercise is aimed to strengthen and broaden the aspects of interoperability and cooperation
between the Indian and Bangladesh Armies.

multiple targets within a range of around 30 km with two vehicle configuration for area air defence.

167. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework to maintain
sound financial health of banks. It facilitates banks in breach of risk thresholds for identified areas of
monitoring, viz., capital, asset quality (which is tracked in terms of the net Non-Performing Assets
ratio) and profitability, to take corrective measures in a timely manner, in order to restore their
financial health.
