Task The project of the term is to design a student life related building on campus. It could
be a bookstore, a gallery, or a learning commons. Or, a program of student’s own
choice. The main purpose of this beginning phase is to build up a foundation for
the whole design development. There are four related tasks, each deals with one
particular issue. First to get to know the site and its context, second to collect data
for a design brief, third to place the given building mass into the site, and the last, to
imagine a scenario of use.

Exercises 01 Get to know the site and its context

To visit the site and study site context in order to understand the basic conditions for
design. Prepare a site model base with given information. Group work.

02 Collect data for a design brief

To collect data of an assigned program through mapping a similar program on
campus. Group work.

03 Placing the building block in site

To place the given building block into the site to establish the basic relationship
between the building and its context.

04 Imaging a scenario of use

To study the distribution of the program and to imagine a scenario of use of the
assigned program through graphic diagrams and text.

Get to Know the Site and Its Context

Task The first task is to get to know the site through a site investigation and, at the same
time, to prepare a site model base for later design. The site visit and site model will
be carried out as team work and documentation will be done individually.

Site model Three site options (A, B, and C) evenly distributed within each section. About 4-5
students share one model base. Please refer to the “site and program” sheet for site
assignment. The model will be used in the next studio time.

Site model requirement Model scale 1:100, model base 60x80cm, MDF board provided. Existing build-
ings presented as simple blocks and made by brown cardboard or corrugated
board. The height of the existing building is estimated that each floor is 3m and the
top floor is 4m (including parapet).

Site investigation Students visit the site in group and take visual notes on site conditions based on the
provided site map.

Photo record Take photos during the site visit to record basic site conditions:
— Approaches to the site
— Views from the site to different directions
— Photos of surrounding buildings

Diagrams on 1:1000 map 1:2000 map shows a large area of campus and the dotted area shows the site and
its immediate context. You can use 1:1000 map for visual notes. You can use either
one analytical drawing to indicate all the issues, or each diagram for one issue.
— Buildings (in black tone), street and trees, and orientation
— Movement for vehicle and people, approach and access

— Major reference lines and open spaces

Sections — Cross sections of the site in 2 directions

Documentation Document your studies in one A3 sheet. Based on information gathered from site
visit, each student makes his/her own documentation sheet.

Collecting Data for a Design Brief

Task Each building has one primary function plus an optional function. Each student is
assigned to one of the three primary programs: learning commons, bookstore or
gallery. You also free to propose a program of your own choice according to the
particular site location. The task here is to get familiar with the assigned program
through case study and data collection. Field study will be carried out as a team
work and documentation will be done independently.

Work Please pay attention that the study group of this task is different than that of site inves-
tigation in order to generate enough variations. Please refer to the “site, program
and object” sheet for program assignment. The study group should conduct a survey
of the same program on campus or consider to transplant the same program in your
new building.

Mapping of space A floor plan mapping as the primary drawing which records your observation on the
following issues:
— The estimated layout plan of the space, especially furniture arrangement.
— Key activities (photos in the plan)
— The basic differentiation of use as served and servant space (color tone)
— Movement, if sequence of movement is an important factor

Key data on furniture-gesture relations Record key data on furniture and facilities. Take key measurements for furniture and
gesture.

Other references Beside team work, each student needs to visit another similar program/building in
town.

Placing the Building Mass in Site

Task You have gained some initial knowledge about the site and its conditions from site
visit and analysis. Now you can make a preliminary proposal on the placement
of the building mass. Each student is assigned to one of the three building masses
of the same dimension. You use the building mass as a spatial defining element to
establish a new relationship within the site context.

Object type A fixed object dimension is given: 9x12x18m. Based on its relations to the ground,
there are three types of object: tall, thin and flat. The basic dimension of the building
object should be remained unchanged.

Work To test different possibilities of the placement with 1:100 site model then to docu-
ment the study in one A3 sheet.

To make one white foam block measuring 9x12x18m in 1:100 scale and to test
variations with site model.

— The given building mass as a spatial defining element which creates new open
space together with existing buildings
— Try to find out formal and spatial relationships between the new building and its
context, such as alignment and axis.
— The location of the new building should work with existing conditions such as
orientation, traffic, approach, movement, and view.

Photograph each solution in axonometric view and perspective view, record the
location of the building in site plan.

Documentation Document three options in one A3 sheet, including three contents:

— Axonometric view photo
— Eye level perspective view photo
— Site plan with the location of the building

Projecting a Narrative of Use

Task You have gained some initial knowledge about the assigned building program
through mapping a similar program on campus. You also already know the object
type and its possible location in site context. Now you can further study the distribu-
tion of the program within the given mass and project a narrative of use through
collage, bubble diagram and text.

Program description
Three types of program: bookstore, gallery and learning commons. The overall floor
area of the building is roughly about 600M2, including double spaces. Beside
spaces for entrance lobby, stairs, toilets and panties, there are about 350~400M2
for the main use. Beside the main program, you can also add an additional pro-
gram such as a kiosk or a tea house.

Learning Commons General study area, rooms for group discussion area, a room for lecture and work-
shop, computer and printing facilities, management office

Bookstore Book sections into several categories, stationary section, reading areas, a multifunc-
tion space for lecture and workshop, cashier, and office

Gallery or museum Permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition, a room lecture and workshop, research
offices, storage space, management office

Work The abstract presentation of the program in three ways:

Collage You begin to imagine a scenario of use within your building

— The distribution of required program according to each floor
— Imagine as if you are walking through your building
— Present in either a sectional view or an axonometric view

Bubble diagram Study the relationship between different uses.

Narrative essay A short text to describe how you enter the building, what you do and what you see
as you walk through the building.

Documentation Document on one A3 sheet, the collage and a list of functional use.
