Manual tracking of a target
1. Objective

The objective of this experiment is to get familiar with:

 Tracking radar
 The manual tracking of a target in both range and direction

2. Equipment(s)

We used a radar trainer LabVolt 8096 and Oscilloscope. It consists of:-

 Radar receiver
 Radar transmitter
 Synchronizer
 Voltage supply
 Horn antenna
 Operating computer set
 Target table set

Figure 1: Radar Lab Trainer (LabVolt 8096)

2
Instead of phased array, we used a horn antenna as shown below.

Figure 2: Directed Horn antenna

3. Readings and Calculations

Q) How do the voltage controlling the range gate position and the range gate distance vary when
the hand control is moved back?

Ans 1) They are related to each other inversely i.e. when the voltage increases the range gate
distance decreases and vice versa.

Q) How do the voltage controlling the range gate position and the range gate distance vary when
the hand control is moved forward?

Ans 2) They are related to each other inversely i.e. when the voltage increases the range gate
distance decreases and vice versa.

Q) Record the measured target range in the following blank space.

Ans 3) Actual target range = 0.762

Q) Align the range gate marker with the target echo pulse using the hand control and record the
distance indicated by the range gate distance display in the following blank space.

Ans 4) Range gate distance = 0.580

3
Q) How do the actual distance and the range gate distance compare?

Ans 5) The actual distance is greater than the range gate distance.

Q) Can the range gate distance display be used to measure the range of a target when the range
gate marker is aligned with the echo pulse that corresponds to the target?

Ans 6) Yes it can be used but sophisticated calibration is needed.

Q) Does the RANGE GATE DISTANCE display provide continuously – updated target range?

Ans 7) Yes the display provides updated target range.

Q) Is manual tracking more difficult at high speeds?

Ans 8) Yes it is difficult at high speeds because the locking of the target becomes much more
difficult.

Review Questions:
 Briefly describe what is continuous tracking radar?
CT radars are radars that designed to track a single target. As a result continuously updated
data about a particular target is obtained.
 What is an O-scope display?
An oscilloscope, previously called an oscillograph, and informally known as a scope or o-
scope, CRO (for cathode-ray oscilloscope), or DSO (for the more modern digital storage
oscilloscope), is a type of electronic test instrument that allows observation of varying signal
voltages, usually as a two-dimensional plot of one or more signals as a function of time.
 What is a range gate marker?
Range gate marker is an indicator which indicates on the o-scope display the time interval
during which the range gate (basically a switch) is closed.
