What’s New in 2005?
Twenty-four years ago, David was teaching high-school physics and writing Apple II
software for use with his students. We sold our first programs that year after placing
an ad in a physics teaching journal. A lot has changed since then. We now have
over sixty employees at Vernier. The technology has come a long way, and you have
more choices in data-collection products. Some things, however, have remained
constant. Vernier has always produced high-quality products at prices schools
can afford. You can count on us for extraordinary customer service, innovative
technology, and an unwavering commitment to science education.

Last year we added our low-cost, USB-direct Go! product line. Our Go!Temp and
Dave Vernier teaching Go! Link products brought the price of data collection down so that schools with
a physics workshop limited budgets could afford to get involved. This year we are pleased to announce
another inexpensive USB-direct sensor: Go!Motion. As part of the development of
Go!Motion, we also have made some nice improvements to our Motion Detector.
We also have added more than 13 totally new products, including several new
physiology sensors (Blood Pressure, Spirometer, Hand-Grip Heart Rate Monitor,
and Hand Dynomometer), a Salinity Sensor, and a Charge Sensor. We are also
announcing some exciting new hardware products: our first Dynamics Track
System, and a Magnetic Stirrer.

The ProScope™ is a digital USB microscope that makes it easy to

magnify and examine objects on your Macintosh or PC computer
screen. The built–in white LEDs allow for easily lighting specimens,
and is completely powered from the computer’s USB port. The
included USB Shot software allows you to capture still images, time-
lapse photography, or QuickTime™ movies.
The basic 50X lens is perfect for a wide variety of uses, including
examining hair follicles, microwriting on dollar bills, and observing
perspiration form and evaporate on the fingertips. Additional
interchangeable lenses (sold separately) provide the ProScope with
tremendous versatility. The 1-10X lens allows the ProScope to be used
as a basic video camera. Magnification can be increased to as much as
200X power by simply attaching different lenses. The C-mount adapter

Science CSI (Concentrated Science Investigation)

The popular crime investigation dramas on TV have captured the interest of a new
generation of high-tech investigators. The Science CSI kit puts this exciting theme to
work in more palatable science lessons for school-aged children. Instead of dead
bodies and bullet holes, students investigate ski accidents, acid rain, and
other real-world scientific applications. The lesson plans are based on the
same premise as real-world investigations: students are presented with
a scenario and challenged to work backwards to solve mysteries.

Physics Vernier Dynamics System

Vernier Dynamics System

We took a standard physics teaching tool and made
it better—a lot better. Our carts are extremely low
friction, and they stay that way due to sealed bearings.
The machined wheels are truly round, unlike molded
wheels. The heavy track stays flat and true, and the
black anodized finish makes for very low friction. Plus,
the flip side of the track works as an optics bench! The
Vernier Dynamics System is a perfect match for the
redesigned Vernier Motion Detector.

Combination Dynamics Track/

Optics Bench
The Combination Dynamics Track and Optical Bench
is black anodized aluminum, and includes a metric
scale on both sides. Extremely rigid, this 1.2 meter track
will not sag under use. A collection of stops, feet, and
brackets to hold Photogates and the Vernier Motion
Detector complete the kit.

Study uniform acceleration with the ultra-low friction Vernier Cart

Vernier Dynamics Carts

The Vernier carts are used
for kinematics
and dynamics
experiments. Attach
a Dual Range Force
Sensor or use them
with our redesigned
Vernier Motion
Detector. Roll the cart
down a ramp to study constant acceleration, or use two
carts to study momentum conservation. With extremely
low friction due to sealed bearings and machined
wheels, this superior cart gives very high quality data.
Interchangeable magnetic and Velcro end caps make it
possible to do many experiments. The Plunger Cart has a
spring-loaded plunger for consistent collisions, while the
Standard Cart is similar, but has no plunger. Vernier carts
Attach sensors easily to Vernier Carts are compatible with other common carts and tracks.

New Design!
Motion Detector
Our redesigned Motion Detector allows you to study the motion of objects such
as a person walking, a ball in free fall, or a cart on a ramp. It can measure objects
as close as 15 cm to the detector and as far away as 6 m. The short minimum
target distance allows objects to get closer to the detector, which reduces stray
reflections. A special Track mode switch tailors the sensitivity for dynamics carts
on tracks for lower noise and higher quality data. The Motion Detector attaches
easily to the Vernier Dynamics Track, and has a pivoting head and rubber feet
for ease of use when not attached to a dynamics track.

Data Collection with TI Calculators
Data collection with a TI graphing calculator is easy, cost effective, powerful, and fun! Students can collect
data with many different sensors in a multitude of ways in the classroom and outside in the field. In a
classroom, for example, students can use a pH Sensor to perform acid-base titrations, a CO2 Gas Sensor to
study cell respiration, or a Motion Detector to study free fall and terminal velocity. Outside the classroom,
environmental science students can monitor water quality or physics students can study amusement park
rides. With over 50 different sensors, the data-collection possibilities are endless!

Vernier LabPro or Texas Instruments CBL 2

LabPro and CBL 2 are powerful data-collection interfaces that put the world of data collection right in the
hands of your students. Each of these interfaces support our complete line of sensors and are designed to
connect to most TI graphing calculators. If you teach science or math, the LabPro and CBL 2 provide you with
the most versatility of any data-collection device available today. A comparison chart to assist you in selecting
which is best for you can be found on the next page. For a complete list of more than 50 compatible sensors,
refer to the chart on page 60.

Vernier EasyTemp™ | EZ-TMP | $38

Inexpensive and easy to use! What more can you ask for? Simply plug Vernier EasyTemp into the
USB port on the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition graphing calculators. The EasyData program
automatically launches, and you are ready to collect data! This stainless-steel probe is durable for
classroom use and covers a temperature range of –20°C to 110°C.

CBR 2™ | CBR2 | $93

If you teach math, physical science or physics, you may want to consider the CBR 2. The CBR 2 collects
distance, velocity, and acceleration data while connected directly to a TI calculator. The connection to
the calculator is through the calculator link port or, if you have a TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition,
the CBR 2 can connect to the calculator’s USB port. When the CBR 2 is connected to the USB port of the
TI-84 Plus, the EasyData application automatically starts, and you are ready to collect data.

TI Graphing Calculators
Vernier LabPro® or CBL 2™?
You have a choice of full-featured data-collection interfaces for use with TI graphing calculators—the Vernier LabPro or the Texas
Instruments CBL 2. Both devices were developed jointly by Vernier and Texas Instruments. The similarities between LabPro and CBL 2
include the plastic housing, buttons, cradle, built-in DataMate program for TI graphing calculators, and Flash memory.
Of course there are differences. The biggest difference is LabPro is designed for use with computers and calculators, while CBL 2
is primarily a calculator interface. Calculator users may choose LabPro, since it has more ports, higher resolution, and offers more
flexibility. The chart below provides a comparison of these interfaces.
Collecting data with either LabPro or CBL 2 and a graphing calculator is quick and easy. Simply plug in your sensors, run the DataMate
calculator program, and you are ready to collect and analyze data! (Photogates, Radiation Monitors, Drop Counters, and Rotary
Motion Sensors require separate programs.) We can also help you get started with your curriculum. We have extensive lab books for
biology, chemistry, physics, math, physical science, middle-school science, water quality, Earth science, and nuclear science—more
than 230 experiments in all!

Sensor Tip for Computer Users: Stored Calibrations
Some Vernier auto-ID sensors are individually calibrated, with the
information stored digitally on the sensor. While you don’t usually
need to calibrate Vernier smart sensors, if you choose to do so, you
can save your custom calibration back to the sensor. When that
sensor is used again, your calibration will be retrieved—even if
you’re using a different computer!

What is JASON?
JASON is an inter-disciplinary, multi-media science program for
middle-grade students that sparks the imagination and enhances
the classroom experience. Since 1989, the JASON Foundation for
Education has been traveling from oceans to rain forests, from polar
regions to volcanoes, to explore Planet Earth and introduce students
to leading scientists. Working together, scientists and students
examine biological and geological development.
All JASON products include innovative and fun graphing calculator
and probeware activities tied to real scientific expeditions. Vernier
and Texas Instruments are proud to supply the technology and
data-collection equipment for JASON!

JASON Expedition:
Disappearing Wetlands
Enhanced for easy and effective classroom application!
Wetlands are unique ecosystems found throughout the world that provide habitat for
an incredible diversity of plants and animals. They are nurseries for countless species
of fish and shellfish that we depend on for food, protect vulnerable coastlines from
hurricanes and storm surges, and help filter and purify the small amount of freshwater
that is found on our planet. Wetlands are also threatened ecosystems. The mission
of this year’s JASON Expedition is to better understand what wetlands are, why they
are disappearing, and how to best manage these ecosystems in Louisiana, in your
neighborhood, and around the world.
