TE 382 Small Group Lesson Plan

Objective(s): list area and specific objective(s) that area addressed in lesson
The Arts: Objective 33- Explores the visual arts
Students will explore the visual arts through mixing colors in Cool Whip.

Materials: list any materials that are necessary for this lesson
-Yellow, Red, and Blue Liquid Watercolor Paint in plastic containers
-Cool Whip
-Spoon for distributing Cool Whip
-Saran Wrap/ Plastic Table Cloths
-Pipettes
-Smocks

Activity:Describe how you will introduce the materials and the activity that the children will do
0123
-I will show the students the materials one at a time. I will give each student a pipette and ask them to
squeeze the end to see what it does.

-I will show the students how the pipette will pick up the liquid watercolor and will let it go when it is
squeezed.

-I will begin taking a primary color, yellow, and put it on the scoop of cool whip in front of me and point
out the color the cool whip is changing to. I will add another color, blue, to the yellow and point out that
the color is changing to green.

-“I wonder what colors you can make with yours.”

-“I wonder what color the foam will change if you mix red and yellow.”

Assessment: Identify how you will assess the children’s learning for a variety of levels (early, middle,
later); consider how you will record their learning and how you will evaluate their progress
0123

Early- The student has an understanding that if you add a primary color it changes the color of the cool
whip, but cannot yet name the colors it is changing to. In this stage, the student is able to mix the colors,
but does not name the colors.

Middle- The student has an understanding that if you add a primary color to the cool whip it changes
colors. The student is able to name the color it has changed to. The student mixes more colors together
and names the colors they are changing it to. In this stage, the student mixes colors and is able to name
the colors they mixed and the color that was the outcome.

Later- The student has an understanding that if you add a primary color to the cool whip it changes
colors. The student is able to name the color it has changed to. The student mixes more colors together
and names the colors they are changing it to. The student points out “I mixed red and blue and it made
purple.” “The foam was white, but I added yellow, red and blue and it made black.” In this stage, the
student understands that they can mix multiple colors and it will create a new color.
Student Early Middle Later
“Look! I mixed this one
and this one and now it
Jeff looks like this!”
(pointing to the colors)

“I put red and yellow in

Aubrey the foam. The foam is
orange.”

“I mixed yellow, red,

and blue. I put a lot of
Alex blue, a little red and a
little yellow. The foam
is black now. There
isn’t black for me to
mix. I made the color.”

Instruction: Identify how you will help move a child from early to middle. Think about what you will say
and do to support new knowledge or skills.

012
-To move a child from early to middle, I would say “Oh look, you made the color purple. What colors did
you mix to make the color purple.” or “Oh, the foam changed colors, what color is it now? I wonder,
what colors did you mix to make that color?” I would prompt the student to identify the colors they are
mixing to create the new colors.

-To move a child from middle to later, I would say, “You did mix red and yellow in the foam to make
orange, I wonder what color the foam would change if you added blue?” or “I wonder what other colors
you could make by mixing these colors? What happens if you add more red?” I would prompt the
student to try creating more colors with the three they are given. I will prompt them to explore creating
and naming the new colors.
