Overview of the Unit: Students will be learning self portraiture and watercolor. I will be reading them I am Jazz by
Jazz Jennings, and go through all of the activities, interests, and identities that make everyone different. After
reading and discussing the picture book, I will prompt all students to draw themselves doing their favorite activity or
with something very important to them. Next, I will have students return to the carpet and we will go over where all
the features on the face go in a portrait. After this, I will give students a larger piece of paper where they will fill up
the page with a self portrait, including something meaningful to them in the background. During the next class
students will use a sharpie to trace over the lines they made with pencil, and will finish off the piece using
watercolor, emulating the style used in the illustrations of I am Jazz. Students will write a sentence about who they
are and what makes them a unique person like Jazz on their piece of art as well.
Lesson:
I will play a Youtube video of Jazz Jennings reading her picture book.
I will prompt students with essential questions to connect the picture book to themselves.
Students will draw pictures of themselves, including activities they enjoy and care about.
Students will then receive a brief portraiture lesson. I will model how I draw my own portrait.
Students will begin their final self portraits.
Students will generate ideas of what activities they do at home or at school that make up apart of their personal
identity.
