1.0 Introduction of the test.

The subject chosen to test the students is English. A class of 12 years old students are
picked to sit for the test. The number of students involved is 20 students. These students
come from different level of language proficiency such as high, medium and low. The test is
conducted for 30 minutes. There are 10 questions to be answered by each student. The test is
aiming on the students’ understanding in English such as their grammar and vocabulary.

The test has been carried and the result is out. The result is as shown below:

2.0 Analysis of the test scores

The test then is analysed by summarizing a collection of data and presented in way that is
clearly understood. The analysis of the test scores are presented by the computation of mean
and median and also by the standard deviation.

The first one is by the computation of mean. The mean or average is the most widely used
statistical tool in educational research. The mean is the most frequently used measure of
central tendency.

Computing the Mean

The mean or X is the figure obtained when the sum of all the items in the group is divided by
the number of items (N). The computation of the test mean is as below:

The sum (∑) of all the 20 scores= 9 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 8 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 +

3+2+2+0+0

= 100

Mean or X = ∑ (X) 100

= = 5
N 20

The mean of test score is 4.6

Notation:

∑ = denotes the sum of a set of values or scores

N = represents the number of values or scores in a group

Computing the Median

The Median is the score found at the exact middle of the set of values. In this analysis, I listed
all the scores in ascending order and then located the score in the centre of the sample. The
computation of the median is as below:

0, 0, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 8, 7, 7, 8, 7, 8, 9, 9,

The median for the test score is: 5

Computing the Standard Deviation

I used Standard Deviation as it is accurate and detailed in estimating the dispersion. The
Standard Deviation shows the relation that set of scores has to be mean of the sample. The
Standard Deviation is a statistic that shows the extent of variability or variation for a given
series of scores from the mean.

The Standard Deviation makes use of the deviations of the individual scores from the mean.
Then each individual deviation is squared to avoid the problem at plus and minus. The
standard deviation is the most often used measure of variability or variation in educational
and psychological research.

The following is the formula for calculating the standard deviation:

Variability or variation or dispersion is determined by the distance of a particular score from

the ‘norm’ or measure of central tendency such as the mean. The standard deviation is a
statistic that shows the extent of variability for a given series of scores from the mean.
Interpretation of the Formula

The standard deviation is found

 By taking the difference between the mean (X) and each item
 Squaring this differences (X-X)2
 Summing all the squared differences ∑(X-X)2
 Dividing by the number of scores (N) minus 1
 Extracting the square root

Computing the Standard Deviation An English test was given to a group of 10 students and
their scores is shown below.

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3

X X-X (X – X)2
9 9 – 5 = +4 16
8 8 - 5 = +3 9
7 7 – 5 = +2 4
4 4 – 5 = -1 1
9 9 – 5 = +4 16
4 4 – 5 = -1 1
0 0 – 5 = -5 25
0 0 – 5 = -5 25
8 8 – 5 = +3 9
3 3 – 5 = -2 4
4 4 – 5 = -1 1
5 5–5=0 0
3 3 – 5 = -2 4
8 8 – 5 = +3 9
3 3 – 5 = -2 4
5 5–5=0 0
7 7 – 5 = +2 4
6 6 – 5 = +1 1
2 2 – 5 = -3 9
7 7 – 5 = +2 4
∑(X-X)2 146

Applying the formula:

Std. Dev =
