Syllabus for Recruitment Examination of

Trained Graduate Teacher (English)

GENERAL INSTRUCTION: Question for Objective Type (Multiple Choices)


and Description Type test for 100 marks each shall be prepared from the same
prescribed syllabi on concerned subject.

Section A
READING COMPREHENSION
Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret unseen texts. Two unseen texts of
varying lengths ( 150-050) words with a variety of objectives type, multiple choice
question (including question to test vocabulary ) testing factual and global
comprehension.
Section –B
GRAMMAR AND USAGE
Ability to apply the knowledge of grammatical items & use them accurately in the
context
The following grammatical structure will be tested:

1. Tense
2. Modals
3. Voice
4. Subject- verb concord
5. Connectors
6. Clauses
7. Parts of speech
8. Punctuation
9. Word formation
10. Structure of Sentences
11. Transformation of Sentences

SECTION –C
WRITING ABILITY
Testing Ability to express view/ opinion in a coherent & logical manner in a style
suitable to the task set.
1. One short writing task such as: notice, message or e- mail writing
2. Writing a report of an event process, or place.
3. Writing an article / debate / speech based on visual / verbal input on a
given topic e.g environment, education, child labour, drug-abuse etc .
4. Writing a letter (formal/ informal ) on the basis of verbal / visual input .
Letter types include (a) letter to the editor(b) letter of complaint (c) letter of
request (d) personal letters.

LITERATURE
To test the candidate’s understanding of the works of writer of different genres and
period of English Literature.
1. Shakepears : Julius Caesar, Othello, the Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, The
Tempest
2. The Romantic Period : Shelley, Wordsworth, Keats, Coleridge, Byron etc.
3. 19th to 20th Century America and English Literature : Robert Frost
Hemingway, Ted Hudges, Whitman, Hawthorne, Emily Dickinson, Bernard
Shaw etc.
4. Modern India Writing in English: Anita Desai, Vikram Seth, Nissim Ezekiel,
K.N Daruwala, Ruskin Bond ,R.K Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, Khushwant
Singh etc.
5. Modern Writing in English from different parts of the world.
