1 Scope
This Engineering Specification defines the requirements for insulation to be applied for this
project.

The aim is to ensure that the performance and application of the work is in accordance with
commonly used standards for good workmanship in the country where the plant is to be
constructed. The forms and standards listed in this specification are to be observed carefully.

No deviation will be accepted unless written approval is obtained from UHDE.

2 General
The insulation codes used in the UHDE forms UF 9256-01, -02, and -03 (9 pages) are taken
from the reference P&I Diagram “Legend of Symbols” B001. The letter specifies the purpose
of the insulation. The codes are used to define the general requirements of insulation and the
range of application. The definition is as follows:

H Heat Insulation
Mineral wool for heat insulation without tracing

HE Electrical Tracing
Insulation by mineral wool with electrical tracing to maintain temperatures above 0°C
required for frost protection

HF Electrical Tracing
Insulation by mineral wool with electrical tracing to maintain a certain temperature
required for process reasons

HS Steam Tracing
Insulation by mineral wool with steam tracing to maintain temperatures above 0°C
required for frost protection

HT Steam Tracing
Insulation by mineral wool with steam tracing to maintain a certain temperature
required for process reasons

P Personnel Protection
Perforated plate for temperatures < 250°C
Insulation by mineral wool for temperatures >= 250°C
as protection for staff against accidental contact to surfaces hotter than 60°C

C Cold Insulation
Insulation by Polyurethane foam
for regular temperatures beneath ambient required for process reasons

1 Scope
This recommendation applies to the thermal insulation of equipment, vessels, machinery and pipelines. It contains
generally applicable requirements for insulation materials (type of insulation material, sheet-metal, hardware) and
the performance of insulation work. This recommendation will be supplemented by special instructions, if
necessary.

Deviations from this recommendation shall be agreed upon in writing.

2 Technical documents
For the performance of insulation work, the orderer will provide plot plans, piping plans, isometric drawings, or
P&I diagrams in which the arrangement and dimensions of the equipment are shown. The extent of insulation
work is outlined in P&I diagrams, isometric drawings and equipment drawings. Data regarding the insulation
materials and insulation thicknesses are compiled in the Uhde form UF 9256-01 Part 1. Unless otherwise agreed,
the Uhde standard UN 5001-02 Part 1 shall apply to the performance of insulation work.

3 General requirements
The insulation work should not be started until the pressure test of equipment and pipelines has been completed.
All joints (bolted, flanged, welded, laminated) shall only be insulated after the pressure test. Valves and flanged
joints which were provided with line blinds shall only be insulated after the leakage test. Pipes without welds may
be insulated prior to the pressure test. For the leakage test of cold-insulated pipelines with process fluids at
operating temperatures, valves and flanges shall be temporarily insulated (e.g. by means of mineral fibre mats)
to prevent the formation of ice.

The surfaces to be insulated shall be clean, dry, and free from coarse rust and scale. If these requirements are
not met, the site management shall be informed by the contractor in due time. The contractor shall inform the site
management of any preparatory work which is not performed properly or not at all by other contractors. The
personnel performing the insulation work shall not walk or stand on insulated equipment, pipes of small diameters,
cable racks and the like.

The insulation materials shall be new and unused and shall correspond to the specified requirements with regard
to quality and dimensions.

shall apply. If the contractor is responsible for storage, the requirements of this recommendation as well as the
manufacturer’s instructions for transport and storage shall be observed.

Equipment and pipelines with operating temperatures of > 70oC which are normally not to be insulated shall be
insulated (protection against accidental contact) in those places where the operating personnel can touch such
items. Protection against accidental contact is normally required near operating platforms, stairs, ladders and
passages. Equipment and pipelines located within these areas or at a horizontal distance of approx. 0.5 m
therefrom shall be insulated up to a height of 2.1 m (referred to the elevation of the area concerned).

4 Insulation materials
4.1 Material requirements
The insulation materials shall be chemically neutral, tear-resistant, rot-proof, vermin-proof, flame-resistant,
dimensionally stable, and free from impurities (e.g. non-fibrated material).

Thermal conductivity (in relation to the reference temperature) and gross density of the insulation materials shall
be demonstrated on demand of the orderer. For the testing methods and tolerances, the specified standards (e.g.
DIN 52 612, ASTM C 177, ASTM C 236) shall apply. Besides the thermal conductivity and the gross density, the
following properties of foam shall be demonstrated on demand of the orderer:
• Water vapour permeability,
• Dimensional stability,
• Cellular structure,
• Coefficient of thermal expansion,
• Water absorption.

Mineral fibre mats shall be of uniform density and thickness. The wire mesh should be made of wire of ≥ 0.7 mm
diameter. The mesh size of the wire mesh shall not exceed 30 mm. The specified chloride ion content of insulation
materials for equipment and pipelines of austenitic CrNi steel shall not be exceeded.

In plants in which nitric acid or ammonium nitrate are produced or used, insulation materials containing organic
binding agents (e.g. phenolic resin) shall not be used. In plants in which the formation of volatile flammable vapours
and gases is possible, only insulation materials with a closed surface (e.g. foam glass) shall be used.

Foam components shall be supplied in unmixed state to the site.

Foam glass shells and slabs shall have small and mainly closed cells. To avoid cracks caused by internal stresses
(e.g. because of changes in temperature), the size of the shells or slabs shall be selected accordingly.

Tie wire of ≥ 0.7 mm diameter, wire hooks or banding (made of metal or plastics) of ≥ 10 mm width shall be used
for attaching mats and shells.

4.2 Installation of the insulation materials


4.2.1 General requirements
Insulation material shall be protected against inclement conditions (e.g. moisture, rain). Damp insulation materials
shall not be used. If work is interrupted (e.g. overnight), unfinished areas shall be covered with tarpaulins or plastic
sheets.

The insulation thicknesses shall be uniform and maintained throughout. Multi-layer insulation shall have staggered
butted joints. The first layer shall be fastened particularly tightly and tied with tie wire (or wire hooks). Insulation
materials on vertical or nearly vertical surfaces shall be prevented from sliding off by means of suitable supports
and tie wire, or banding.

Instrument process lines and other closely spaced pipelines may be insulated in bundles (up to six lines). Orifice
plates and other measuring devices shall be insulated in accordance with the instructions of the site management.

4.2.2 Mineral fibre mats


Mats shall be cut to suit the outer diameter of the insulation. They shall be laid with closely butted joints and
clamped with wire hooks at approximately 150 mm spacing.

Mats on pipes with a nominal size of ≤ DN 100 may be tied helically with tie wire.

Each layer of mats on vertical equipment and vertical pipes with diameters of ≥ 1 m shall be additionally secured
against sliding off by means of banding.

If claddings of aluminium, aluminium alloys or high-alloyed steel and mineral fibre mats on galvanized wire mesh

are specified, electrolytic corrosion shall be prevented if there is any possibility that moisture can enter behind
the cladding.

4.2.3 Mineral fibre shells and slabs


Shells and slabs shall be laid with closely butted joints and tied with tie wire at 100 to 150 mm spacing.

Slabs may be glued. However, they shall be additionally secured with tie wire or banding.

4.2.4 Packing
If insulation with mineral fibre mats, shells or slabs is impossible, elbows, inaccessible areas and cavities may
be packed with loose mineral fibres if approved by the site management.

4.2.5 Foam shells and slabs


Shells and slabs shall be laid on clean surfaces with closely butted joints. The joints may be glued. Adhesives
shall not adversely affect the foam and coatings. The adhesives and sealing compounds recommended by the
supplier of shells and slabs shall be used.

In case of foam glass shells and slabs, suitable protection against abrasion shall be provided if movements
(because of changes in temperature) are expected between the insulation and the surface.

Shells and slabs to be laid in several layers shall be applied with staggered joints.

Valves, flanged joints, etc., should also be insulated with shells. Cavities and gaps shall be carefully filled with
the same type of foam.

4.2.6 Foaming in-situ


Surfaces to be insulated, spacers and inside surfaces of the cladding shall be free from oil, grease and moisture.

Foaming may be performed in closed (chamber method) or in open systems (visible foaming). In the case of the
chamber method, the volume of the chambers and the amount of the foam mix to be filled in shall exactly be
adapted to each other.

In the case of foaming in closed systems, at least one opening for filling and one opening for inspection shall be
provided at the uppermost point of the respective chamber.

Visible foaming (e.g. in the case of vertical equipment) shall be performed after each course of sheet-metal has
been installed.

Prior to foaming, the ends of the cladding (e.g. at flanges) shall be sealed against the foaming pressure (e.g. by
means of shaped parts of foam). Flanges and valves shall be covered with a plastic sheet to allow easy removal
of the foam at a later date.

The manufacturers’ instructions for mixing the foam components shall be observed. Foaming may only be
commenced at ambient temperatures of > 10oC. The temperature of the surface to be insulated and the cladding

shall be > 15 C and shall not exceed 40 C. The foam components should have a temperature of about 20 C
during the mixing procedure. Foaming is not permitted at a relative air humidity of > 90%. The system to be
foamed up shall be protected against solar radiation.

In-situ foaming should be commenced after the site management has inspected the cladding. All cavities shall
be foamed up completely.

After foaming, the openings for filling shall be sealed by means of covers made of sheet-metal or plastics. The
openings for inspection shall be sealed by means of self-tapping screws and seal washers made of plastics as
soon as the foam overflows.

4.3 Insulation with tracing


For better heat transfer, a thermal shield or a thermal foil shall be placed between the insulation material and the
tracing. The shield or foil shall prevent the insulation material from penetrating between the tracing and the surface
to be insulated.

Thermal shields shall be attached with tie wire or by metal banding. In the case of self-adhesive thermal foils, the
adhesive shall not adversely affect the sheathing of the tracing cables.

In the case of plastic pipes, an aluminium foil may be placed between the surface to be heated and the tracing
cable for better heat distribution. This foil shall be placed as smooth as possible. The tracing cables as well as

the sensing elements of temperature measuring and control instruments shall not be damaged and their position
not be changed.

4.4 Vapour barrier


Vapour barrier foils shall overlap by ≥ 50 mm.

When forming a vapour barrier by coating, the mastic shall be applied to the outer surface of the insulation
according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The glass fabric shall be embedded into the fresh mastic without
any wrinkles. The courses of glass fabric shall overlap by ≥ 50 mm. The second coat of mastic shall be applied
onto the glass fabric. The minimum total dry thickness specified by the manufacturer shall be observed.

4.5 Expansion joints


Unless otherwise stipulated in a drawing, the location of expansion joints for cold insulation made of cork or foam
will be determined by the site management. On vertical surfaces, the expansion joints shall be arranged below
the existing support rings.

The expansion joints shall be carefully packed with suitable material and sealed with an elastomeric joint sealer
(about 10 to 12 mm thick). The contractor shall submit proposals for the design of the expansion joints in due
time.

Foils shall overlap the vapour barrier by > 50 mm.

4.6 Supports and brackets


Supports and brackets of hot equipment shall normally not be insulated. Supports, brackets and pedestals of cold
equipment including the insulation blocks (e.g. between support and foundation) shall be completely insulated to
prevent the formation of condensation, white frost or ice during operation.

5 Spacers and supports


5.1 Material requirements
The supporting rings of spacers for heat insulation shall be fabricated from strap iron of ≥ 30 mm width and 2 mm
thickness. Corrugated sheet-metal with a smaller thickness may be used instead of strap iron. Strap iron shall be
used for the webs for operating temperatures of ≤ 300 oC. Heat-resistant steel webs or ceramic cylinders of ≥ 16
o
mm diameter shall be used for operating temperatures of > 300 C. Supporting rings and metallic webs shall be
separated from each other by a heat-insulating and heat-resistant sheet of approx. 5 mm thickness.

Spacers made of foam shells may be used for cold insulation. The gross density of the foam shall be at least
equivalent to the gross density of the specified insulation material.

Bolts of ≥ M 6 and flat head rivets of ≥ 5 mm diameter shall be used as connecting elements.

Supports (e.g. shells) made of hard-foam or hard wood shall have sufficient compressive strength.

5.2 Arrangement and installation of spacers and supports


5.2.1 General requirements
Unless otherwise specified, spacers and supports shall be fabricated according to orderer’s standards.

Normally, spacers do not require protection against corrosion. If there is any possibility that moisture can enter
behind claddings of aluminium, aluminium alloys or austenitic CrNi steel, the supporting rings shall be provided
with a protective layer (e.g. self-adhesive plastic tape).

Spacers shall be provided on pipelines at a certain spacing. The spacing results from the width of the sheet-metal
specified for the cladding minus 50 mm. Elbows shall be provided with spacers at about 700 mm spacing, however
at least at both ends. Spacers are not required for insulation with mineral fibre or foam shells.

5.2.2 Heat insulation


The use of spacers depends on the gross density of the insulation material, insulation thickness and nominal size
(or diameter) of the equipment and pipelines.

Spacers shall be attached by clamping or gluing. Spacers shall be installed in such a manner as to prevent damage
to the equipment. The contractor shall request the site management in due time to perform any necessary welding
work.

Spacers shall always be provided for insulation materials with a gross density of < 75 kg/m3, and for vertical

surfaces. Spacers shall be provided for horizontal surfaces according to table 1 for insulation materials with a
gross density of ≥ 75 kg/m3.

For attaching the spacers, vertical equipment is normally supplied with clips. In the case of spacings of the clips
of > 900 mm, the contractor shall attach additional spacers by clamping.

Pipes and vessels, which shall be suitable for foot traffic, shall be provided with a sufficient number of spacers.
Spacers of corrugated sheet-metal with webs of strap iron shall be provided for equipment which is not round,
funnel-shaped or angular.

Surfaces of austenitic CrNi steel shall be separated from the steel webs of the spacers by a sheet of chemically
neutral material which is resistant to temperature and pressure. The sheet is not required if the webs are made
of austenitic CrNi steel.

Plastic surfaces shall be separated from the webs by sufficiently wide sheet-metal collars (made of the same
material as specified for the cladding).

For the number of webs of spacers, table 2 shall apply.

5.2.3 Cold insulation


Spacers are only required for in-situ foaming. Foam shells used as spacers for pipelines should have a width of
50 mm. Circular foam blocks or segments should be used for large surfaces. Angular blocks shall be arranged
to have one of the corners pointing downwards.

The foam spacers shall be secured (e.g. by gluing) to avoid displacement by the foaming pressure. For vessels
and tanks, the spacing of the spacers shall be selected in such a manner as to ensure that the specified insulation
thickness is reached uniformally.

Half-shells shall be used as supports for pipelines. Unless otherwise specified, pairs of half-shells shell be held
together by a sheet-metal ring and secured against shifting. The sheet-metal ring shall be designed to permit the
cladding to be properly joined. Other shells (e.g. 60o shells) and individual half-shells are inadmissible unless
suitable measures are taken to prevent shifting. The location of supports will be specified by the orderer (e.g. in
the isometric drawings).

6 Claddings
6.1 Material requirements
Standard sheet-metal shall be used for the cladding. The sheets may be delivered in the form of coils or plates.
Corrugated sheet-metal may be used for large surfaces (e.g. tanks).

The sheet thicknesses shall not be less than specified. Thin-walled cladding may be replaced by cladding made
of thicker sheets.

Upon orderer’s request, alloying composition, thickness of corrosion protection (e.g. galvanization or coating) and
other material properties (e.g. tensile strength, hardness) shall be evidenced by certificates.

Claddings of aluminium or aluminium alloys shall not be used in plants for the production or processing of caustic
soda.

Aluminium sheets with oxidized surfaces may be used if approved by the site management.

Metal banding of ≥ 10 mm width and approx. 0.4 mm thickness or self-tapping screws of ≥ 4 mm diameter and ≤
13 mm length may be used for attaching the cladding. Suitable turnbuckles or simple snap catches shall be used
for connecting the ends of the banding. Galvanized banding, turnbuckles, snap catches and self-tapping screws
shall not be used for claddings of aluminium or aluminium alloys.

Flat-head or hollow rivets of ≥ 3 mm diameter made of high-alloyed steel shall be used for attaching the
turnbuckles, snap catches, banding, sheet-metal clips, etc.

Cladding joints shall be sealed by means of elastomeric sealing tape (approx. 15 mm x 2 mm) or elastomeric
sealing cord.

6.2 Arrangement and installation of claddings


6.2.1 General requirements
The cladding shall be rigid and fixed in such a manner that it cannot slide off and that any damage to the equipment
is prevented.

For claddings with a diameter of < 150 mm, circumferential joints may be “crimped”. For larger diameters, the
overlapping of the circumferential joints shall be ≥ 50 mm. The overlapping shall have a crimp. The linear extension

of equipment and pipelines with operating temperatures of > 100 C shall be considered by “expansion joints”
properly arranged.

Longitudinal joints should overlap by 30 to 50 mm. The overlapping shall have a crimp. In the case of cladding
for pipelines and elbows, only longitudinal joints shall be screwed. In the case of horizontal pipelines, the joints
of the cladding shall be staggered by about 100 mm and arranged above the centreline of the pipe.

Cladding of elbows shall consist of individual segments of identical width. Circumferential joints may be joined
by “crimping”. Longitudinal joints of the segments shall overlap sufficiently. For the cladding of elbows with nominal
sizes of ≤ DN 15, segments are not required.

Self-tapping screws should be spaced at intervals of approximately 100 mm (in case of foaming in-situ) up to
150 mm (in case of heat insulation). The lengths of screws shall be selected in such a manner as to ensure that
parts under the cladding (e.g. vapour barrier) will not be damaged. In the case of rotating equipment or equipment
subject to vibration, plastic washers or lock washers shall be installed to secure the screws.

The cladding of insulated vessel bottoms shall have the same shape as the bottom itself. If the diameter of the
bottoms is > 2.5 m, the sheet-metal segments shall be reinforced by suitable sections of the same material. The
following shapes are permissible for the cladding of the bottoms:
• Funnel-shaped or flat for slightly dished bottoms of ≤ 1 m diameter,
• Calotte-shape for dished bottoms of > 1 m diameter,
• Zeppelin-shape for heavily dished bottoms of > 1 m diameter.
Surfaces suitable for foot traffic shall have an adequately reinforced cladding. These surfaces shall be marked
(e.g. by coloured markings).

Sheet-metal coated with plastics shall be treated with due care. Damaged sheet-metal shall not be used. Visible
cutting edges shall be coated with a suitable protective coating. In special cases (e.g. corrosive atmosphere), the
sheet-metal shall be folded at the longitudinal and circumferential joints by approximately 10 mm to the inside
prior to shaping.

For large surfaces, corrugated or reinforced sheet-metal shall be used.

6.2.2 Heat insulation


The cladding shall be rainproof. Circumferential joints of outdoor claddings shall be sealed. Longitudinal joints
shall only be sealed if the max. allowable working temperature is < 150oC. The sealing tape shall be placed in
front of (visible) the self-tapping screws. In weather-protected locations (e.g. in buildings), sealing of the joints is
not required.

Claddings of ≤ 0.5 mm thickness need not be crimped or screwed. Blind rivets, clamps or banding may be used.

Horizontal equipment and pipelines located outdoors which are designed for intermittent operation shall have
holes of a diameter of approximately 10 mm drilled into the lowest points of the cladding at a spacing of
approximately 200 mm for the draining of condensate. Details shall be clarified with the site management.

Cladding shall be set back from flange connections so that the bolts can be removed without difficulty.

The ends of the cladding shall be closed by means of two-part or multiple-part front plates. Front plates shall be
fixed in a crimp or folded into the cladding. Front plates shall not come in contact with the surface to be insulated.
In case of electric tracing, the front plates shall be arranged in such a manner that the tracing cable will not be
damaged.

Unless otherwise required by the site management, name plates, plugs, vent holes, stencils, etc. shall not be
covered by the cladding. In such areas, the cladding shall be cut out, provided with inserts and sealed. At nozzles,
pipe supports, hangers and other penetrations, the cladding shall be cut properly and sealed.

In the case of claddings of coated sheet-metal, the insulation shall be checked for heat transfer bridges or cavities,
since excessive heat results in the destruction of the coating. Heat transfer bridges and cavities shall be eliminated
with suitable insulation material.

6.2.3 Cold insulation


In the case of in-situ foaming, all joints in and penetrations through the cladding shall be sealed in such a manner
that the cladding meets the requirements of a vapour barrier. The sealing tape shall only be placed behind the
self-tapping screws.

Front plates are not required at the ends of the cladding.

6.3 Caps
Flanges and valves with heat insulation shall normally be provided with caps, consisting of several screwed parts,
easy to install and with the insulation material fixed to the cap. The insulation mats shall be fixed in such a manner
that the wire mesh faces the surface to be insulated. The insulation mats shall be attached by means of
sheet-metal clips. The sheet-metal clips shall be riveted to the inside of the cap. Heat transfer bridges at the joints
of the cap shall be prevented.

The joints of easily removable caps shall be provided with a sufficient number of snap catches. Snap catches
shall be attached with at least four rivets directly to the cap or to suitable banding. In case of claddings with a
thickness of ≤ 0.8 mm, a reinforcing sheet shall be placed on the inside of the cap. Front plates do not require
snap catches.

Valve caps shall be insulated in such a manner that stuffing boxes remain accessible. The upper front plate of
vertical caps (with a slight gradient towards the perimeter) shall have a double fold or shall be corrugated to
prevent the penetration of liquids. Vertical or sloping pipelines shall have water deflectors above the caps.

The inside surfaces of removable caps for cold insulation by in-situ foaming shall be provided with a suitable
separation agent to avoid adhesion of the foam to the cap.
