THE TRUMPET CALL

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume V Issue 15 April 14th, 2019

We are sorry the online version of the Trumpet Call, the ENews, did not go out as it should have
last week. It was scheduled through our group email carrier, Constant Contact, but for some
reason it was not sent and for that we apologize. We will monitor this to make sure it goes out to
the congregation as scheduled each week because our church communication is very important
to a well-functioning church body.
I want to celebrate with our congregation the completion of several important studies during the
season of Lent. Prior to Lent in the cold of January, the Financial Peace University (FPU) started under the direction
and leadership of Mike and Darla Piancone. The Piancones had done this study themselves and found it life
changing and wanted to offer it to our church and community. It was offered every Tuesday night (two sessions
postponed due to snow/ice) for about fifteen people. There were, however, others who were unavailable on Tuesday
evenings, so the Piancones took it upon themselves to offer an abbreviated version of it Sunday afternoons, and
another ten were a part of that group. We were blessed to not only have members of our own congregation, but also
people from the community who had seen it on the FPU website. I was privileged to join them for graduation last
week and to hear the testimonies of how God has been reordering their financial lives to help get and keep them out
of debt and moving toward healthy giving to the Kingdom of God. We are already planning for the next FPU!
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality (EHS) has been a pilot group of twelve persons on Thursday nights to use excellent
material from the Rev. Peter Scazzero. Pete is a pastor and founder of a church in New York City, and his personal
experience, learnings, and insight have helped people to go deeper in their relationship with Jesus Christ as they
take a hard look at the emotional issues which often prevent spiritual growth. I am indebted to Bob Snyder, Deanna
Mayers, and the Discipleship Team for a successful launch of EHS, and like FPU, we will offer this eight-part group
of sessions again, probably in the fall.
More than 120 have been involved in the Not a Fan small group experience, watching a series of powerful videos,
studying Scriptures together, and responding in a group format. We have paired this with preaching from some more
difficult biblical texts, and Scott Kuhnle will preach the last sermon in that series on Palm Sunday, April 14. I give
thanks to God for Scott spearheading this series, getting it all organized, and taking the leadership with the sermon
series.
Also this Sunday, we will welcome and consecrate a new group of Stephen Ministers; four to be exact: Michelle
Dodoo, Ann Osbun, Bobbi Snyder, and Bryce Williams. They have put in over 67 hours of study and classroom time
to be equipped to walk alongside those who are going through difficult times in their lives and need someone to listen
and to pray. I give thanks to God for this group of people and the Stephen Leaders who have spent a great deal of
time providing the training. Stephen Ministry has made a huge positive impact on our church and community.
I am continuing my Monday afternoon study, Great Things He Has Done, focusing on the miracle stories of Elisha in
2 Kings in the Old Testament. Anyone is welcome join the study (each session is self-contained, so you can jump in
at any time) each Monday from 3:00-4:00 pm, followed by a time of prayer for our church and community from 4:00-
4:30 pm. The study takes place in the Family Comfort Room off of Oberholtzer (to the right of the elevator). As you
can clearly see, God has gifted us with many solid opportunities to grow in our faith, and more are “in the pipeline.” If
you have any suggestions for studies or feel God leading you to coordinate one, please see Deanna Mayers, chair of
our Discipleship Team. Let’s keep growing in Christ!
Blessings, Pastor Jim

A Time of Celebration
Sunday, April 14th we celebrate four caring members of
our congregation who have heard the call of the Lord
and left their nets to follow him! They have the spiritual
gifts to be Stephen Ministers, and they have participated
in many hours of training learning how to carry out this
ministry for the Lord. Now they stand poised, ready to
begin their journey in this caring ministry. As we
commission Ann Osbun, Bobbi Snyder, Bryce Williams
and Michelle Dodoo sending them forth to minister, let
us thank God for the love and the generosity that
inspired their response to God’s call. And let us continue
lifting our prayers in support of this caring ministry at
ESUMC and the community!

Stephen Ministry is
Christ caring for people through people.

NOTES FROM THE NURSERY
Jesus teaches was the focus of our lesson in the
preschool nursery. Our guest speaker was Mrs.
Elizabeth Stokes, a 6th grade teacher from Stroudsburg
Middle School, and a member of our ESUMC
congregation. The children were reminded of the various
parables they had learned like The Lost Sheep, The
Good Samaritan, and The
House Built on Rock and
Sand; and how Jesus used
stories to teach us how God
wants us to live our lives. Mrs. Stokes brought in Easter marshmallows for the children
to practice sorting by color and number, and then the children got to enjoy a school
puzzle, game, and a snack too. The preschool nursery class would like to thank Mrs.
Stokes for her visit to their class.
ALSO…..The ESUMC Children’s Ministry and Nurseries and Staff would like
to give a BIG THANK YOU to the SWAT team and Facilities Crew for the recent
painting of both of our nurseries. Your work is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
