_________. Prepared under the supervision of Ms. Camille E. Moron.

INTRODUCTION

There are many studies that explored teaching techniques that encouraged

students to actively engaged in the material because of the classroom engagement has

been found to promote deeper levels of thinking and better facilitate encoding,

storage, and retrieval than traditional lecture (Mc Glynn, 2005 etc..). As stated in the

Cavite State University Vision “The premier university in historic Cavite recognized

for excellence in the development of morally upright and globally competitive

individuals” also stated in the Cavite State University Mission “Cavite state

University shall provide excellent, equitable and relevant educational opportunities in

the arts, science and technology through quality instruction and relevant research and

development activities. It shall produce professional, skilled and morally upright

individual for global competitiveness”.

Darling – Hammond (2010) defined an effective teacher as one who is

intellectually challenging, motivating students, setting high standards and encourages

self-initiating learning. Anderson (2004) viewed an effective teacher as those who

achieved the goals set for them. Effective teachers are very important for the students

learning. However, teachers’ effectiveness is difficult to define since there has not

been a consensus agreement on what measured quality teachers (Stronge, Ward and

Grant, 2011). On the other hand, it is possible to measure some teachers attribute like

interaction with the student, teaching strategy, motivation, persuading student s to

strive more in study and classroom management through qualitative research

approach. These teachers’ attribute could act in a long way to determine teachers’

effectiveness. (Stronge, etc. 2011) identified four dimension that were used to

characterize an effective teacher as follows; Instructional effectiveness, Uses of

assessment for student learning, Positive learning environment and Personal quality of

the teacher

University teachers are often heard expressing concern that students are

faculty differ in their views of what constitutes effective teachers/teaching. If faculty

and students do not agree on the criteria of what constitutes effective teaching, then

faculty members may be suspicious or skeptical of students evaluating their teaching.

This is especially pertinent nowadays, since more universities and colleges are

assessing their faculty based on the student feedback. Therefore, the main intent of

this study was to find out whether there were consistencies and inconsistencies

between students and faculty in terms of specific characteristics students felt to be

more important than teaching, and vice versa. Hence, the primary objective of this

study is to discover if there existed only one portrait of the effective teacher which cut

across all four diverse population groups sampled in this study.

instructional delivery, the way that instructor interact with the student in the class

An effective instructor must have an high expectation about learning. An

instructor who has low expectation of his or her students about learning a concept

would not care if at the end of the semester student doesn’t understand the concept. If

on the other hand, the instructor had aimed high on students understanding of the

concept; but at the end of the lesson the students don’t understand, the teacher should

be moved to seek for cause and possibly teach the concept again for improvement in

understanding.
