Instructional Procedures

Focusing Event: Ask students to raise their hands if they know what cause and effect means.
Have a few students who raised their hands write their own definitions on the board. Then assist
the students definitions to create an elaborate definition for the class to refer to and write in their
journals.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

 Pass out scissors and constructions paper and model how they will be cutting and folding
the paper to create a foldable.
 The teacher will then model for the students how to fill in the foldable. Students will not
copy on their own foldable, but just watch. Teacher will use example from the “Itsy Bitsy
Spider” book in class. She will draw the sun coming out on the top of the foldable, and
the sun drying the rain on the inside of the foldable. The top of each flab will be the
cause, and the inside of each flap will be the effect.
 Students will then work independently to create their own foldable using their own cause
and effect relationships. They may use the story books in the classroom to look for ideas.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Walk around the room when students are
working, and have students turn in their independent work to check errors.

Reteach (alternative used as needed): If reteach is necessary on cause and effect work in a small
group with students who are struggling and show them different cause and effect relationships
they see on a daily basis.

Closure: The students will complete a “snowstorm”. The will do this by writing down their
favorite part of the lesson, and then throw the paper to the front of the room. Students will then
pick up a piece of paper and read it aloud.
