plagiarism, collusion, falsification, replication, taking unauthorised notes or devices into an
examination, obtaining an unauthorised copy of the examination paper, communicating or
trying to communicate with another candidate during the examination, and being a party to
impersonation in relation to an examination.
2. The above mentioned and any other actions which compromise the integrity of the academic
evaluation process will be fully investigated and addressed in accordance with UTT’s
academic regulations.
3. Please be reminded that speaking without the Invigilator’s permission is NOT allowed.
1. (a) With the aid of simple sketches define the following terms:
(i) Angle of Loll;
(ii) Righting Lever;
(iii) Metacentric Height;
(iv) Heel. (16 marks)
(b) Sketch a ship in an unstable equilibrium condition when heeled to a small angle of heel
clearly indicating the following:
(i) G; (3 marks)
(ii) B; (3 marks)
(iii) M; (3 marks)
(iv) GZ; (3 marks)
(v) Lines of action of Wf and Bf. (2 marks)
(b) Distinguish between the terms ‘stiff’ and ‘tender’ conditions of stability making
particular reference to the rolling characteristics of the ship in each case. (10 marks)
(b) Calculate the amount of ballast to shift between two ballast tanks each 7.8 m out from the CL for
the ship to complete upright. (10 marks)
4. A ship displacing 14000 tons, KG 7.34, KM 8.18 m is floating upright. A double bottom tank of
rectangular cross section is divided into two equal parts each 20 m long, 8.0 m wide and 2.0m
deep. In the upright condition the starboard side is full of ballast water (RD 1.025) and the port
side is empty.
Calculate the resulting angle of list when half of the ballast water is transferred from the starboard
side to the port side. (30 marks)
5. (a) With the aid of appropriate sketches define the following hull terms:
(i) Summer displacement;
(ii) LBP;
(iii) Freeboard;
(iv) Bilge Keel;
(v) Margin Plate;
(vi) Sheer. (18 marks)
(b) State which design features is considered when assigning freeboard. (2 marks)
(c) Compare the use of longitudinal framing against transverse framing, stating briefly the
advantages and disadvantages. (10 marks)
6. (a) State the principal reasons for the fitting of double bottom structures in ships.
(10 marks)
(b) Sketch a half midship cross section of a longitudinally framed double bottom in way of a
plate floor clearly identifying all structural components. (20 mark)
7. Describe how torsion forces might occur and minimized in container ship’s structure:
(b) With the aid of a sketch (in plan view) describe the structural arrangements incorporated
within a ship’s structure to resist panting stresses. (20 marks)
