Rationale for Standard 7: Planning for Instruction
Artifact name: My teacher work sample plan
Standard:
The teacher draws upon knowledge of content areas, crossdisciplinary skills, learners, the
community, and pedagogy to plan instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous
learning goals.
What the Standard means to me:
When planning for instruction the teacher uses what they know about the subject, and what
integration tactics they can use. They think about what their learners need and how each
student can meet the goals of the instruction being taught to them.
Indicator:
7 (a) Individually and collaboratively selects and creates learning experiences that are
appropriate for curriculum goals and content standards, and are relevant to learners.
Description of the artifact:
When planning out my teacher work sample unit on air and whether I wanted to first get an
overall plan of what I was going to be doing with the students, that is what the first chart on
my artifact is. I then needed to come up with the goals that were going to drive my unit, which
is what the second chart represents. The last chart is the assessment plan that I had put in place
based on the overall plan and the goals I had created for the unit. I end the artifact with a
narrative on my overview of the unit. In the narrative, I talk about how I started planning for
this unit, how I adjusted things, and how I made this work for each learner in the classroom.
Rationale:
The charts and narrative on this artifact show that I put a lot of meaningful planning into this
unit. I wanted each learner to be successful, and in order for that to happen, I had to take into
consideration each learner in my classroom and what they needed in order to reach their full
potential. I worked on this plan individually, but also with the help of my mentor since this is a
unit she has taught before. She gave me tips on things I should implement, as well as, the very
basic guidelines the district had in place for this unit. While planning I was thinking about the
different types of experiences I wanted the students to have that would match the goals. I show
this in my overall plan chart where I plan out meaningful activities and then I align them with
the different learning goals it covers. I made sure to think about my learners when planning
and what they were going to need, I talk about this in my narrative. I am proficient in the
standard and indicator because I use planning in a meaningful way that is going to guide the
unit and help my students be successful with these curriculum goals.
