Content Development: Teacher use the mind opener as a warm up to introduce


a lesson. Ask the students what they would wear, eat or drink on a cold or hot
day. Sum up their responses.
(i)Exploration of topic:
*Class room activity- Teacher distributes various picture cards depicting
different seasons, foods, clothes, houses, Hill stations to each child 1-1. Ask
the students to form groups based on different seasons of India. Explain the
weather concept.
* Define weather and climate
* Differentiate between weather and climate
* Explain different climate affect the clothes people wear, food they eat,
types of houses they live in.
(ii) Explanation of topic:
 Factors that affect climate will be explained by the teacher with the help
of diagrams, pictures and examples.
 The terms-Latitudes, Altitudes, Humidity, Wind, Distance from the sea,
Moderate, Coastal regions etc. will be explained using map work based
climatic regions, pictures and diagrams.
(iii) Extension of topic:
 Explanation of three climatic or heat zones of the Earth-(1) Torrid zone
(2) Temperate zone (3) Frigid zone.
 Global Warming and the greenhouse effect due to human activities also
cause climatic variation. According to scientist, the Earth has warmed by
1degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years.
 Activity Time- The teacher gives each group the name of a country or
city. The students have to tell the class in which climatic zone the place
lies with the help of a world map.

HOTS Questions:
 Delhi is further away from the Equator than Chennai. But summer in
Chennai is not as hot as in Delhi. What is the reason for this?
 Bengaluru is cooler than Chennai although both the cities are at an equal
distance from the equator. Why?
 If you stand in the sun, you feel warmer at noon than in the morning or
evening. Why?
 Human factor is also an important factor causing climatic variations.
What are the reasons for this?
Value based questions:
 Wind can be so powerful that it can even uproot the strongest of trees. Do
you think it is good to show power by harming others? Why or why not?
 Human activities have an adverse effect on climate. Do you agree? If yes,
then how each one of us can help to reduce global warming?

 Read and note down the weather forecast in the newspaper (maximum
and minimum temperature) for about ten days and observe the changes in
weather every day. And give your conclusion.

climatic zones of the Earth.
