Rationale for Standard 10: Collaboration
Artifact name: Chickadee awards with another second grade classroom
Standard:
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for
student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals,
and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
What the Standard means to me:
The educator takes it upon themselves to engage with: administration, learners, families,
colleagues, and others in order to keep growing and get new ideas that will help them and the
learners in their classroom.
Indicator:
10 (r) Takes initiative to grow and develop with colleagues through interactions that enhance
practice and support student learning.
Description of the artifact:
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday the second graders get together in a large group to do a
read aloud. The two second grade teachers and I take turns reading. My mentor has always
participated in the chickadee book awards with the students. She reads each nomination to
them, discusses the different parts of the book, and then when we finished, all of the students
vote for one book they want to win. Throughout the weeks of doing this, she puts the parts of
the book on the wall outside of the classroom for the students to remember. The overall winner
is the book she votes for on the chickadee award website. I had to the opportunity of
participating in this event and reading some of the books during reading aloud. The artifact
shows the poster we put on the wall with the parts of the book for the students to remember.
When it is time to vote we put all of the books outside of the classroom and that is where the
students go out and vote. We then tallied up all of the votes and wrote the number of votes
each book received.
Rationale:
This exerpeience really helped me grow as an educator. I was able to collaborate with my
mentor and the other second grade teacher in order to support the learners in an engaging
activity. The learners were also able to collaborate in the bigger group of students to engage in
books they would soon be voting on. Through this experience and artifact, I am supporting the
students learning about book awards, and the responsibility of voting. This interaction was a
good opportunity for me to be able to collaborate with colleagues, but also being able to watch
the students collaborate in an activity that they were truly passionate about. By supporting
learners with two other colleagues I show I am proficient in this standard and indicator.
