BE - SEMESTER–VI (OLD) • EXAMINATION – WINTER 2017

Subject Code: 161903 Date: 03-11-2017

Subject Name: Computer Aided Design
Time: 02:30 pm to 05:00 pm Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Select the specifications of the CAD workstation in need of present software 07
requirement. Justify your answer.
(b) Explain Bresenham’s algorithm to scan a line with the help of suitable sketch. A 07
line is required to draw from (25, 25) pixel to (62, 44) pixel. Calculate first six
position for the same using Bresenham’s algorithm.
Q.2 (a) What is need of Graphics Standards? Explain file format of IGES. 07
(b) For points P0=(110, 220) and P1=(330, 110) with corresponding slopes 60 and 07
30, formulate the equation of a Hermite cubic spline and plot the curve by
finding intermediate points at u=0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8.
OR
(b) Develop the conditions necessary for 2nd order continuity between two 07
segments of a cubic curve.
Q.3 (a) A rectangle ABCD has vertices A(50,100), B(200,100), C(200,200) and 07
D(50,200). This rectangle is to be reflected about a line P(20,20) and
Q(110,130). Determine the vertices of transformed rectangle.
(b) Find the concatenated matrix for the following operations in sequence: 07
a) Translation through 15 and 32 units along X and Y axis.
b) Scaling by 4.5 in X axis and 3.5 in Y axis.
c) Rotating about Z axis passing through the point(4,3) by 60º in
anticlockwise direction.
OR
Q.3 (a) A cube of length 25 units is having one of its corners at the origin (0, 0, 0) and 07
the three edges along the three principal axes. If the cube is to be rotated about
Y axis by an angle 30º in the counterclockwise direction followed by rotation of
45º in the clockwise direction about X axis, calculate the new position of the
cube vertices.
(b) Explain ruled surface, surface of revolution and tabulated surface. 07
Q.4 (a) Explain general steps to be followed in Finite Element Analysis Procedure. 07

1
(b) For the spring assemblage shown below determine nodal displacements using 07
Minimum potential energy approach. Take k1 = k2 = 100 N/mm, k3 = 70 N/mm,
k4 = 120 N/mm and P3 = 100 N.

OR
Q.4 (a) Derive the equation to implement boundary condition in Finite Element 07
Analysis using penalty approach.
(b) Consider the bar in figure below. Determine the nodal displacements. Use 07
penalty method for handling boundary conditions.

Q.5 (a) Explain the differences between conventional design process and optimum 07
design process.
(b) A manufacturer sells products A and B. Profit from A is Rs10 per kg and from 07
B Rs 8 per kg. Available raw materials for the products are: 100 kg of C and 80
kg of D. To produce 1 kg of A, 0.4 kg of C and 0.6 kg of D are needed. To
produce 1 kg of B, 0.5 kg of C and 0.5 kg of D are needed. The market demand
for the products is 70 kg for A and 110 kg for B. How much of A and B should
be produced to maximize profit? Formulate the design optimization problem.
OR
Q.5 (a) Explain the basic steps of optimization. 07
(b) Find the dimensions of a minimum cost cylindrical refrigeration tank of volume 07
50 m3, if the circular ends cost Rs. 1000 per sq. m, the cylindrical wall costs Rs.
600 per sq m, and it costs Rs. 8000 per sq. m to refrigerate over the useful life.
