CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION TO EXPERIMENTAL METHOD

1. What is an experiment?

Experiment is research method for testing different assumptions by trial and error under conditions
constructed and controlled by the researcher. During the experiment, one or more conditions are
allowed to change in an organized manner and the effects of these changes on associated conditions
is measured, recorded, validated, and analyzed for arriving at a conclusion.

2. Discuss the relation between theoretical method and experimental method in engineering
context.

The relationship between theoretical method and experimental method is both method is analysing
based on observation and calculation. For giving a result, theoretical method is giving general result
before doing the experiment using experimental method to get specific result. For example black
cloths are absorb heat more than white cloth, this result are in general but prove it we used
experimental method. Before we get into experimental method we do not need to have many
accommodations when doing observation on the situation or problem then we can use ecperimental
method to get accurate result.

3. Describe a typical experimental procedure.

In experimental procedure, it must contain an objective for the experiment, planning on how to
achieve the objective preparation of material or equipment to be used, step by step procedure on
the experiment, collecting data after get the result, repeat the procedure to get more accurate
result, analyse the results to describe the variable and finally make a report to describe experiment.

4. Explain importance of storing an experimental record.

They provide a basic reference which the individual and others can refer to a later date legal
evidence with respect to the materials recorded, such as conception of an invention and the date
there of or date of reduction to practice and test results in some instances are required for
compliance with the provisions in many grant and contractual arrangements.

5. Discuss in detail about the difference between scientific experimental procedure and engineering
experimental procedure.

the scientific experimental to ask questions about the natural world. The scientific experimental
begins with an observation, which leads the scientist to ask a question. She or he then comes up
with a hypothesis, a testable explanation that addresses the question.A hypothesis isn't necessarily
right. Instead, it's a "best guess," and the scientist must test it to see if it's actually correct. Scientists
test hypotheses by making predictions if hypothes is X is right, then Y should be true. Then, they do
experiments or make observations to see if the predictions are correct. If they are, the hypothesis is
supported. If they aren't, it may be time for a new hypothesis. While Experiments carried out for the
purpose of collecting data to be analysed and studied are carried out in the laboratory, in the field or
using computer numerical models. It also can be a combination of two or three of the said
techniques . The decision on the location of an experiment depends on the objectives and scope of
the research. Each method has its own strengths, challenges and limitations as well as additional
considerations to be included.
