Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will ponder these questions and develop their own ideas in relation to Educated: A Memoir by Tara Webster:
1. How can a person’s home environment impact their emotional development?
2. How do characters in a novel actively impact the theme?
3. How do significant moments in people’s own lives compose their own memoirs?
4. How is the patriarchy playing an active role in the novel, and how are patriarchal views enforcing views onto others? Are these views limiting or enhancing
to someone’s character?

Unit Summary:

Unit Summary:
Everyone has a story, yet people rarely pay attention to others long enough to understand what makes them unique and what environments have contributed to
shaping them into the person they are today. This unit will focus on Tara Webster's Educated: A Memoir, where students are exposed not only to how a memoir
is constructed, but also how great a person's hardship can be and how traumatic living situations may impede upon their own growth emotionally, physically, or
mentally, inhibiting their full developmental growth.
This unit also strives to help students realize the world in which they live. As a society, we oftentimes forget that people are subjugated to hostile familial
environments and seeing as this book was published in 2018, the students will be able to recognize the hardships that people still face. This will be done by
analyzing characters, their desires, and the societal expectations placed onto each of the characters that affect Webster's journey and impact her overall theme.

While the students will be learning about Webster's individual story within this unit, this novel will also allow them to think about and fully develop their own
stories and memoirs. These memoirs will, in turn be shared to the class, helping each of the students understand their peers better than before, creating a
stronger connection between the class, which can ultimately impact the way in which they see the world.

profiles. Once separated, go to the website Slap Happy Larry to familiarize yourself with character
their peers and the desires. After finishing that, you will be expected to create character maps for the main characters (Tara,
class to discern Mom, Dad, Tyler, and Shawn) from the novel. To do this, you will be using the online
text-to-self and resource Popplet.com. Specifically, on these maps you will analyze how they relate to one another by
text-to-world addressing five different questions within each of the character charts, which are as follows:
connections from 1. How do they view themselves?
the novel. 2. How do others view them?
3. What do they want?
4. How do they get what they want?
5. How do they change over the course of the novel?
In order to start your character maps, all you have to do is click on the Popplet link above, and start by
creating a “Popple” for the character you would like to begin answering the questions. Then you can
create new Popples to address the questions, which you can label by number (i.e. 1., 2., 3., Etc.) Be sure
that each of the questions you address are connected to the character’s Popple by connecting a line
between the two of them. Repeat this for the other characters, answering the questions to the character
maps as you go. Feel free to split up the work between yourselves however you would like. To answer
these questions you will be using textual evidence to support your claims, including the page number (at
least one quote per question, per character). You will also have to write at least one sentence about what
this quote reflects. Please analyze deeply and relate to the themes often. Although you are all doing it
together, you will all be expected to turn in your assignments individually.
