This thesis is entitled “The Preservation and Protection of the Culture of
Mangyan Tribes through Tugdaan School of Mangyan: A Case Study”. It is a qualitative research which aims to: a) Know the profile of the informants, b) Describe the nature of the Tugdaan School, c) Describe the education system and its role in preservation and protection of the culture of Mangyan tribes in terms of Curriculum, Faculty, Students and Facilities, d) Identify the problems encountered by the Tugdaan School in relation to the preservation and protection of the culture of Mangyan tribes in their Curriculum, Faculty, Students and Facilities and e) Identify the contributions of Tugdaan in terms of Preserving and protecting the Culture of Mangyans.
The researchers used the Structural-Functional Theory to be used as a
foundation of this study. They used selected Mangyan Teachers and students to be their informants in achieving better results. The Mangyan Community created Tugdaan to preserve and protect their culture which can be explained by the theory that proposes the society and its structures that has specific functions to achieve stability, harmony and evolution. The approach used by the researchers is the Qualitative study, which is also the reason of using Case Study as their research method. It is an in-dept investigation of a group or phenomena. As stated, the informants were full- blooded Mangyans who used to work and study in Tugdaan. Purposive sampling was the technique used in selecting the 7 teachers and 5 students for the study. The researchers also used In-depth interview to gather more relevant and distinct informations.
The results showed that Preservation and Protection of the Culture of
Mangyan Tribes can be seen through: their Integrated DepED curriculum and IP Curriculum; additional subjects such as Mangyan Culture and Community development and major contributions of Tugdaan in shaping the students to be proud Mangyans. A Formal Education among the indigenous peoples such as Mangyans may be unique but Tugdaan proved that culture could be preserved and protect through Education.
This study also recommends among the students of Tugdaan to
continue their education despite of the challenges they were encountering as IPs; the local government could help schools like this to empower education for the IPs more, so they could preserve and protect their culture, as they say, their identity; and also to the local citizens, that they could help or volunteer so programs such as this could educate more IPs and people in rural areas.
