5. In the following figure, light from ray A refracts from material 1 (𝑛1 = 1.8) into a
thin layer of material 2 (𝑛2 = 1.5), crosses that layer, and is then incident at the
critical angle on the interface between materials 2 and 3 (𝑛3 = 1.2).

(a) What is the value of incident angle 𝜃𝐴 ?

(b) If 𝜃𝐴 is decreased, does part of the light refract into material 3?
Light from ray B refracts from material 1 into the thin layer, crosses that layer,
and is then incident at the critical angle on the interface between materials 2
and 3.
(c) What is the value of incident angle 𝜃𝐵 ?
(d) If 𝜃𝐵 is decreased, does part of the light refract into material 3?

R / If the layers are parallel, the angles are equal.
a) As the refractive indexes are known, we can find the critical angle of the ray
when being reflected from material n2 to material n3.
𝑛3
𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃𝑐 = ∨ 𝑛2 > 𝑛3
𝑛2

1.2
𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃 = = 0.8
1.5
𝜃𝑐 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (0.8) = 53.130 = 𝜃𝑟𝑎

𝑛1 𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃1 = 𝑛2 𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃2

1.5
𝜃𝐴 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (1.8 𝑠𝑒𝑛 (53.13))=41.8°

The incident angle θA=41.8°

a) If θA is decreased, the ray never passes to material n3, it is observed that
the angle of the reflected ray changes direction reflecting to the left.

Let's do an essay with the Angle θA=30°

1.8
𝜃𝑟𝑎 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (1.5 ∗ 𝑠𝑒𝑛 (30))= 36.9°

𝑛2

1.2

1.5

𝜃𝑐 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (0.8) = 53.130 = 𝜃𝑟𝑏

𝑛1 𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃1 = 𝑛2 𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝜃2

1.5
𝜃𝐴 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (1.8 𝑠𝑒𝑛 (53.13))=41.8°

Since the angle of incidence is perpendicular to the original angle, the

equation is similar but the 90 ° are subtracted

90° - 41.8° = 48.2°=θB

a) Let's carry out an essay with the Angle θB=20°

1.8
𝜃𝑟𝑎 = 𝑠𝑒𝑛−1 (1.5 ∗ 𝑠𝑒𝑛 (20))= 24.2°
As the angle θB decreases to 20 °, it is observed that the exit angle also
decreases, and does not reflect in material 3 since it is less dense than
material 2.
