The HISTORY of DOUBLE RL

F OUNDED in 1993 by Ralph Lauren, the Double RL brand was created

as a modern tribute to the independent spirit of the untamed West and
the tireless resolve of the American blue-collar worker. Both the brand name
and logo are tributes to Mr. Lauren’s working RRL cattle ranch in Colorado,
which manifests the soul and lifestyle of the brand.

OUR MISSION
The Double RL mission is to create timeless wardrobe staples through
the recreation of the authenticity and craftsmanship inherent in vintage
garments, with an absolute obsession for the highest quality in execution.

Starting in spring 2013, Double RL developed an exclusive, 16 oz. selvedge denim woven on vintage Draper shuttle looms in the Cone Denim “White Oak” mill
in Greensboro, North Carolina. Draper shuttle looms are the world’s oldest original denim looms still in operation. The denim they produce replicates a quality
from the 1940s with a loose weave that allows for “grin-through”—wherein the light weft yarns show through the face of the cloth. Additionally, the burn-off,
or “singe,” has been reduced in the finishing process, leaving more fibers on the denim yarns for a “hairy” finish.
This new denim is used in the Slim Fit Rigid, Slim Fit Once Washed, Low Straight Rigid and Low Straight Once Washed. These jeans are of the highest quality
and authenticity. They are made entirely in the USA—from the denim from which they are cut to the rivets that hold them together.

in Massachusetts, created a fabric called
Beach Cloth, a lightweight wool/cotton
blend with water-repellent properties and
slight elasticity. The fabric was named
for Mr. Beach, its creator, and was sewn

a garment that could stand up to New

DELIVERY THREE

The beginning of the 20th century brought an

expansion of Europe’s railroads, and subsequently
an opportunity for merchants to ship fish from the
Scottish Isles. Hardy wool garments, most notably
Aran sweaters, were necessary for the men who
spent their days on the ink-blue sea. They were
joined on land by herring lasses—women who came
from villages along the coast to gut and package
fish—to meet the demands of the growing industry.
Their work, however, came to a halt at the First
World War, when the fishermen were called to join
the ranks of the Royal Navy Reserve.

Born in Wisconsin in 1876, George Kromer
(nicknamed Stormy) was a semi-pro baseball
player and railroad engineer. After losing a few
hats from sticking his head out train windows, he
asked his wife Ida to design a cap that would stay
put even in the fiercest winds. So, Ida modified one
of his baseball caps with pieces of fabric that tied

A. Back collar seam is internally bound to
maintain a smooth and consistent fit.
B. Front and top shoulder seams are internally
bound to ensure a smooth finish that will not
stretch. This forces the extra fabric in the
sleeve armhole and jacket-back to the back for
a comfortable fit through the shoulders.
C. High armholes provide a trim and
comfortable fit.
D. Sleeves are lined with signature Bemberg
stripe, which is hand-finished at the armhole.
E. Half-canvas construction consists of a
floating chest pad made from two cotton-wool
blend woven layers with an internal layer of
camel hair and wool. This pad is attached at
the shoulder-seam, and provides the shape and
structure through the chest. The balance of the
jacket front has a fused lining.

THE PUREST EXPRESSION OF

FROM THE 1930s

From the design and the creation of the cloth, to the construction and finishing of the ties,
the process has stayed 100% authentic and original.

• Piecegoods for the ties are all sourced exclusively
from Italy and the United Kingdom. All the mills
have hundreds of years of tradition and are able
to create the finest qualities available in the world.
RRL draws upon their extensive archives to perfectly
recreate vintage patterns.
• Double RL ties are inspired by ties of the 1930s,
which featured overall lighter construction (i.e. less
bulky lining) and distinctly flared ends. Creating the
complex curved lines that appear at both ends of the
tie require every piece to be cut by the hand of a
single master cutter in the factory.
• Each tie is cut on a perfect 45-degree bias and the
spine of the tie is sewn by hand with a slip stitch.
The slip stitch is intentionally loose to allow the tie
to be resilient and recover its shape after long hours
of wear.
• Ties are “untipped” meaning that there is no cloth
backing at either end of the tie. It used to be perceived
in the neckwear industry that if you tipped a tie you
had something to hide; either concealing the reverse
of cheap piecegoods or shoddy workmanship. The
process requires more precise work and comes at a
higher expense.
