PROJECT REQUIREMENT (20%)

SEMESTER 2 2018/2019

“COMPOSTING@COMMUNITY”

Project aim:

This project will help your understanding to achieve several goals for this course
including developing the ability to incorporate composting which is a part of solid
waste management option and transfer the knowledge to the community by using
appropriate environmental engineering principles.Through this project students
are able to enhance awareness and development of sustainable environment for
their self and the community. At the same time student able to improve their
communication skill and work in group effectively to solve problems for the
assigned project. (PLO12, A4)

Project description

Introduction

Composting is the best option in reducing amount of waste disposed directly into
landfill. Currently, CEP Simpang Renggam landfill facing problem in managing
increment of solid waste coming into the landfill. The amount received higher than
the design daily solid waste loading of the landfill. This creates problems such as
landfill space and leachate contamination. One of method to reduce this solid
waste amount is by applying composting method. 60% of our solid waste consist
of food or organic waste. This organic waste can be transform into compost and
later used as fertilizer for plantation. It is a way to complete the cycle of waste
management by return it back to natures sustainably. To make composting as part
of our cultures, we should educate the producer of the food waste which is the
community. Students are required to handle a transfer knowledge activity among
this community to guide them how to do composting. This program is known as
“COMPOSTING@COMMUNITY”

Project instruction:

1. In a group of 6, choose a nearby school / restaurant/ stall/ residential/

commercial area (the area could be around UTHM or around Parit Raja) for you to
handle a campaign on “COMPOSTING@COMMUNITY”.
3. Elaborate the background of the selected area.

1
2. Identify and describe the types, amount and characteristics of food/organic
waste and how it’s generated in that area.
3. Define the impacts of that particular solid waste to the environment based on
their characteristics.
4. Describe the food waste/organic waste current practice in the selected area
4. Proposed a suitable composting process for the respected area. The suggested
process must be able to be apply by community in that area. Explain also the
positive outcomes if the community chose composting to change their current
practice in disposing food /organic waste.
5. Handle a composting demonstration activities for the selected area by allowing
involvement of the participant
6. You can also include elements that can make your campaign become more
interesting.
7. At the end of the campaign you are required to conduct questionnaire survey on
how effective is your campaign in improving their composting knowledge.
