(SHORT-ANSWER QUESTION) (40 Marks)
i) The low temperature reservoir of a Carnot engine is at -3°C and has an efficiency of 40%. It is desired to increase
the efficiency to 70%. By how many degrees should the temperature of hot reservoir be increased?
ii) A capacitor of 200 pF is charged to a P.D of 100V. Its plates are then, connected in parallel to another capacitor and
are found that the P.D between the plates falls to 60V. What is the capacitance of the second capacitor?
iii) Find the Q-value of nuclear reaction 88Ra226 → 2He4 + 86Rn222 + Q.
(Given 2He4=4.002603u, 86Rn222 =222.017574u and 88Ra226= 226.025406u)
iv) The coil of a Galvanometer having a resistance of 50 ohms and a current of 500 micro-amperes produces a full-scale
deflection in it. Compute:
* The shunt required to convert it into an ammeter of 5 amperes range.
* The series resistance required to convert it into a voltmeter of 300 volt range.
v) Obtain Boyle’s and Charles’s law on the basis of Kinetic Molecular Theory.
vi) Explain qualitatively and quantitatively what happened when a current carrying coil is placed in a uniform magnetic field.
vii) How fast an airplane can be moved to appear half in length to an observer at rest?
viii) Find the electric field and potential at the center of square whose diagonals are 50 cm each when charges each of
4µc are placed at four corners.
ix) A tank of oxygen at 0°C has a volume of 4 liters and the pressure is 50 atm. Calculate the mass of oxygen in the tank.
x) An electric bulb is marked 200W, 240V. If the supply voltage drops to 150 volts, what is the heat energy produced
by the bulb in 10 minutes?
xi) Explain why electric lines of force do not intersect?
xii) Name the three nuclear detectors. Explain the construction and working of Wilson’s cloud chamber.
xiii) Briefly describe the Decay law and Half-life. Why are many artificially prepared radioisotopes of elements rare in
nature?
xiv) An emf of 50mV is induced in a coil of 500 turns, when the current in a neighboring coil changes from 10 amperes
to 5 amperes in 0.2 seconds. Calculate the mutual inductance of the coils and rate of change of flux in second coil.
xv) What are Intrinsic and Extrinsic semiconductors? Describe the working of Transistor as an amplifier.

NOTE:- Attempt any Two questions from this section. All questions carry equal marks. Draw diagrams, where necessary.
Q.1. (a) Name the device used to increase or decrease output A.C voltage. Describe its principle, Construction and working;
also derive expression of its efficiency.
OR
Describe the principle, construction and working of galvanometer. How it is converted into an ammeter or volt meter.
(b)Drive the equation for capacitance when:
i. Air is used between the plates completely. ii. Dielectric is used partially between the plates.
Q.2 (a) Explain the phenomenon of photoelectric effect. How did quantum theory explain it? Derive Einstein’s equation
of Photoelectric effect.
OR
(b) What is meant by Ampere’s law? Obtain expression for magnetic field due to a solenoid or toroid.

Q.3 (a) Drive the equation for energy and radius of hydrogen atom for nth orbit?
(b) Describe the construction and working of a Carnot engine and drive the expression for the efficiency of Carnot
engine also draw labeled graphical representation of the Carnot cycle.
OR
Describe the principle, construction, working, labeled diagram and equation of AC generator in term of instantaneous
and maximum emf.
