REPORT: ORIENTATION DAY

DAY 1

CIVIL SERVICE TRAINING INSTITUTE

We were privileged and honored to have a guest

speaker from MIT-CST.

On 19th June 2018, at 1 pm, we were given a brief idea about the CIVIL SERVICE
TRAINING PROGRAMME. This Institute facilitates the studies for UPSC Civil Service
Examination, which is the gateway to All India Services i.e 26 services (IAS,IFoS)
and Central Services like IFS,IRS-IT)

At MIT-CST, we were given proof that they offer the best guidance, which helps in
the overall development of the Civil Services aspirant. Eminent Lecture Series,
Experiential Learning Activity, Group Discussion, Continuous Evaluation and so on
are the best features of this Institute.

With regard to our course (BBA-IB)

this training programme is marked to be very essential as our course is in the line
of International Business, this training programme becomes a part of the policy
making process and is in direct relation to our graduation degree.
HERITAGE OF FORGEIN TRADE
On the same day, we were given yet another guest lecture on the GOLDEN ERA
OF FORGEIN TRADE by Dr. Manjiri Bhalerao , she is an expert on archeology and
culture of Ancient India and has also received her PhD in this field.

Dr. Manjiri, explained the economic concerns of those days w.r.t India’s trade, the
Harappan civilization trade and also the importance of the achievement of
ancient India

She gave us a brief presentation on the topic and it began with the following
points:

Division of Indian History

1) Prehistory

On the basis of availability of sources (if the material was written or oral)

2) Protohistory
If the material was written – no corroboration
3) History
If the material was written and in oral – can be corroborated with each
other .

She further explained the Historical period of Indian History

1) Ancient period- 6th C BC- 12th C BC

2) Medieval period- 13th C AD-19TH C AD
3) Modern period-19th C AD-1947

Dr. Manjiri spoke about our nation proudly and gave us the highlights of India
which are the due important factors of shaping our Indian history and culture
such as the:

a. Himalayan mountain ranges

b. Indo gangetic doab
c. Deccan plateau
 d. Coasts
e. Monsoons

With respect to each and every factor she explained the importance and every
feature which makes the factors what they actually are. From the way they were
formed to how they help our nation in situations of war or tourism.

She further explained how Foreign trade began in India, through the first
urbanization that is the SINDHU-SARASWATI CIVILIZATION which was given the
timeline of about 2500 BC-1700 BC, the characteristics of this civilization are as
follows;

a. Urban settlements
b. Extensive agriculture
c. Use of copper, bronze and stone implements
d. Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Kalibangan, Dholavira, Rupar were such planned
towns in this civilization
e. There was an underground drainage system

Also the most important texts i.e the Vedas was discovered in this period.

The International trade was discovered by Alexander Cunningham from sumer

who published the first Harappan seals.

But there is no corrobation between the two.

The second urbanization was from the 6th century BCE to the 12th century BCE
This is where the historical period of India starts, the archeologists have reliable
material sources for this period.

There was a foreign invasion by Alexander but he did

not enter India through any such part

We were also told that Herodotus- the father of

history in the world wrote about India which gave us
a clue about where India arose from and its various
civilizations.

EVIDENCE OF FORGEIN TRADE.

ROUTE OF THE INDO- ROMAN TRADE

The Indo-Roman trade relations was trade between the Indian subcontinent
and the Roman Empire in Europe and the Mediterranean. Roman and Greek
traders frequented the ancient Tamil country, securing trade with the
seafaring Tamil states.
 DAY 2

PORT SECTORS: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

On the 20th of June, that is the second day of our orientation, we had yet another
session on importance of port sectors in our economy. The talk was given by
Gandhali Divekar, who is an expert in International Business and foreign trade
which is in due line to our course.

Her main focus was to teach us the prime factors and features of ports in the
world an due importance.

She started the talk with a brief introduction of ports, their types and also the
different categories in international business

She pin-pointed at ports being the GATEWAY to our nation. The types of
international business include trade companies, multi-national companies, multi-
location companies. All these companies are dependent on International Business
policies due to their exchange of goods and services over seas.

Also, counting on the infrastructure of these companies are a bold and a marked
point for the upcoming challenges. Ports are an example of infrastructure through
which fast delivery, good efficiency (cost) and the quality for cargo material is at
its best.

Considering that the BBA-IB course defines business on an international level

foreign policies and procedures for the companies are a must to know.

Whether its for importing or exporting of goods from one boundary to another.
One way of getting things transported in due time is through sea.
There was a brief explanation given on the Sagar Mala Project:-

Which is a strategic and customer-oriented investment initiative of the

Government of India entailing setting up mega ports, modernization of India’s
existing ports and development of 14 economic zones, enhancement of port
connectivity via road, rail, multi-modal logistics parks, pipelines and waterways
and to promote coastal community development, further resulting in job
employment.

The major work done at ports is is the delivery of goods. One such type of good is
cargo. There are different types of cargos’ such as the container cargo, bulk cargo,
liquid cargo, medical or pharmaceutical cargo.

ABOUT PORTS

Ports constitute an important economic activity in coastal areas. The higher the
through put of goods and passenger’s year-on-year, the more infrastructure, the
provisions and associated services are required.
Ports are also important for the support of economic activities in the hinterland
since they act as a crucial connection between sea and land transport.

Our guest speaker, Miss Gandhali Divekar did an excellent job giving us an idea of
how business is carried forward through the different mediums of transportation,
she mostly focused on ports as they are a star point of our nation considering the
amount of water bodies we have.
 DAY 3

WORLD YOGA DAY

Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines which

originated in ancient India. There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices and
goals in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Many studies have tried to determine the

effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia,
asthma and heart disease. Also, at our Institute yoga is treated as a compulsion
for students and active participation has led to less stress and relaxation of the
body helping the students to be more focused in the college activities

On the 21st of June, which was the last day of our orientation, our class in charge
Dr. Prasad Patak ended our session with a relaxed guest lecture which was taken
up by Dr. Kalyani Badve who is an expert at yoga and meditation and a keen
citizen in building our nation

Dr. Badve told us the importance of yoga in our daily lives, emotionally, spiritually,
economically, physically and socially.

She showed us how one must exercise and concentrate on breathing for staying
calm and relaxed. She also sang various yoga mantras that helped the students to
perform the exercises peacefully.

She gives regular yoga classes not only for students but even for adults. It was
truly a great experience to have such a remarkable person in our mist and give us
her thoughts and time.
