Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity.

Electrical
engineers work on a wide range of components, devices and systems, from tiny microchips to huge
power station generators. The advent of the modern age is marked by the introduction of electricity to
homes, businesses and industry.

It began in the 19th century with some innovators who turned ideas and concepts about electricity into
practical devices and systems that ushered in the modern age. Some of the most prominent pioneers
in electrical engineering include Thomas Edison (electric light bulb), George Westinghouse (alternating
current), Nikola Tesla (induction motor. Since its early beginnings, the field of electrical engineering has
grown and branched out into many specialized categories, including power generation and
transmission systems, motors, batteries and control systems.

Electrical engineers design, develop, test and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment,
such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems and power generation
equipment.

Critical skills needed in electrical engineering include an in-depth understanding of electrical and
electronic theory, mathematics and materials. This knowledge allows engineers to design circuits to
perform specific functions and meet requirements for safety, reliability and energy efficiency.
An electrical engineer might spend a significant amount of the time meeting with fellow engineers to try
to come up with solutions to the problems or challenges that they face while working on projects.

Power and Energy engineers deal with energy generation by a variety of methods, including turbine,
hydro, fuel cell, solar, geothermal, and wind. They are also responsible for electrical power distribution
from source to consumer and within manufacturing plants, offices, hospitals, and laboratories. They
design devices such as electric motors, relays, transmission lines, and batteries.
Of special significance now is the global attempt to improve the efficiency of energy use, and the effort
to identify and use alternative cleaner sources of energy. With the soaring prices and reduced
availability of fossil fuels, the search for alternatives has become a major objective of electrical
engineers who work in the fields of power and energy.

 Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy.
Electricity is most often generated at a power station by electromechanical generators, primarily
driven by heat engines fueled by combustion but also by other means such as the kinetic energy of
flowing water and wind. Other energy sources include solar photovoltaics and geothermal power.
 Electric power transmission is the bulk movement of electrical energy from a generating site,
such as a power plant, to an electrical substation by a transmission network.
 Electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electric power; it carries electricity
from the transmission system to individual consumers. Distribution substations connect to the
transmission system and lower the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV
and 35 kV with the use of transformers. Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage power
to distribution transformers located near the customer's premises. Distribution transformers again
lower the voltage to the utilization voltage of household appliances and typically feed several
customers through secondary distribution lines at this voltage.
 Electrical energy marketing is the activity of buying or selling energy, either from a generator or a
distributor.
