DETECTOR CARE AND WINDOW REPLACEMENT

When operating Olympus Innov-X FPXRF analyzers, great care should be taken to protect the
instrument detector. The detector is the most fragile and also very expensive piece of hardware
inside the instrument and to avoid expensive repairs, users should follow the guidelines in this
document.

 Always wear the wrist strap when using the instrument.

 Always store the instrument in the provided padded case.
 Only let trained people use the instrument.
 Be wary when taking measurements near or on sharp objects (shavings, turnings, uneven
scraps etc.)
 Check the instrument Kapton or Prolene window at regular intervals. If the window is
damaged, do not use the instrument until the window has been replaced (please see proper
window replacement procedure below).
 DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN THE DETECTOR (i.e. canned air, compressor or even with Q-tips)!
Even a slight pressure on the detector window can damage it.

Correct Kapton or Prolene window installation procedure.

1. Place the instrument lying on its side on your desk. Carefully place the screwdriver on the
screw and support / cover the window with your other hand (Figure 2). Open both screws on
the window hinge.

2. While replacing the window, be careful not to drop anything inside the probe head. Place the
new window in place as below, close the hinge and tighten the screws. Again, support / cover
the window with your other hand.
