Short Course in English, 2019-20

Course Requirements

Short Course in English at the Institute of Modern Languages is designed for the students
who have seccessfully passed the admission test administered by the same institution. It is an
elementary level course. The duration of the course is 60 contact hours for three-four days a
week (two hours per class). There a midterm examinaiton and a final examination at the end
of the course. The midterm examination is administered after 30 hours of teaching and the
The final examination is held after completion of 60 hours of teaching.

Aims:
The course aims to enable the students to:
 Listen to elementary level audio output to understand easy-to-pronounce words,
simple sentences, identify basic syllable and sentence stress, understand names of
countires, things, jobs, colors, numbers, prices, relationships, information, address
detiasl, simple reduced pronunciations etc. in varoius contexts and modalitites.
 Use and understand relatively elemetnary level English spoken in various kinds of
social and professional situation including functions like introducing, describing work
and school, talking about people’s appearance, weather, bargaining over price,
discussing families and friends, sports and athletes, talking about past, present and
future events etc.
 Read and understand elementary level texts in English, belonging to difffernt genres
on different topics (from general to popular topics in vaious media) e.g., popular
topics, figures, pastiems, emails, advertisemtns, fashion, sports, medicine,
environemtn etc.
 Write different types of elementary level texts including siple questions, biogrpahical
infromation, comparisons, text messages, favourite activities, online posts,
avertisments, simple articles, review, place and plan details, etc. to fulfill various
types of communicative needs with an understandable accuracy.
 Develop accuracy in grammar inclusing items WH-questions, demonstatives, adverbs
of frequnecy, there +verb structure, modal verbs, degrees, tenses etc.

Examinations
Students will have to take three exams at the apointed time. No make-up examination will be
administered for any test missed.
Breakdown of the marks of the examination will be as follows:
Total Marks:300
Paper I: Reading (60)+ Listening (30)=100 Marks
Paper II: Writing (60) + Grammar (40)=100 Marks
Paper III: Sessional Tests (25+25)+ Speaking Test (40) + Class Performance and attendance
(10)=100 Marks

Requirements for the successful completion of the course:


Regular attendance is a requirement of the course. Students who are absent more than three
consecutive days will not be allowed to continue with the course. At least 75% attendance is
required to take the final exaination 60-74% attendance is non-collegiate, i.e. students are
allowed to take examination only after paying a fine. Students having less than 60%
attendance will not be allowed to take examination.

Grading System
The final grade will be the average percentage of all three examinations. However, students
will have to pass each paper individually. Minimum pass mark is 40% in each paper.
