HDF 415: FLITE Peer Leadership

URI Minor in Leadership Studies, Center for Student Leadership Development

Core Requirement for the Leadership Minor

Learning Contract
Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths of achiever, responsibility, restorative,
positivity, and developer as well as my Values of teamwork, honesty, social intelligence,
gratitude, and prudence during URI Welcome Days as a coordinator for the Leadership
Ambassador program that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored
programs and activities of URI’s Center for Student Leadership Development. I also
consider it a goal to empower, encourage, and challenge the first year Ambassadors in
FLITE to make a lasting impression on prospective first year students. This is pivotal to
the recruitment of these prospective first year students to the Leadership Institute as
well as the minor in Leadership Studies.

Activity: For my HDF415 learning contract, I was a coordinator for the Leadership
Ambassador program. I attended URI Welcome Days in the Ryan Center for three
weekends in April and worked with first year leadership ambassadors to positively
promote the Leadership Studies minor and the Leadership Institute. This role included
clear communication with the ambassadors, availability in my schedule to attend all
three Welcome Days, training the first year ambassadors referencing my position as an
ambassador last year, and supporting the ambassadors at Welcome Day when they are
communication with prospective first year students. Through this experience, I was able
to see my strengths and values in action. I used my strengths of responsibility, positivity,
and developer as well as my values of teamwork, social intelligence, and gratitude as a
coordinator. I used positivity to help the ambassadors as well as the potential incoming
first years get excited about leadership and to help some make a decision on whether or
not they will choose URI. I chose to come to URI for the Leadership Studies minor after
attending a Welcome Day two years ago, so I am looking forward to this experience.
This is where my gratitude value shined through, as I expressed this experience to
potential future students in the minor. I was able to use teamwork to make sure that all
of the ambassadors felt valued and enjoyed the experience, but also used responsibility
to ensure that they are all prepared to answer questions and represent the CSLD in a
positive light. Lastly and most importantly, I saw myself using my strength of developer
when working with the ambassador team. I saw a lot of growth in the ambassador team
and know that they will do great things both in and out of the minor. I believe these
students were selected intentionally to represent the minor and have the relational skills
to impact others. I was able to see their strengths and leadership styles grow and shine
as they communicated with students and their parents. Although the purpose is to get
attendees excited about the minor, the ambassadors had a lot of room to learn and
grow, and they took that opportunity and used it to grow. I am very grateful for this
experience and am glad that the students had the opportunity to share their experiences
with the Institute and the minor. April is a good time for some self reflection, and I hope
the ambassadors were able to learn more about themselves and make a good
impression.
