a a Bee HH Bk se im SPECIFICATION FOR LOW ALLOY STEEL ELECTRODES AND FLUXES FOR SUBMERGED ARC WELDING Ss SFA-5.23 iy (sensieal with AWS Specification AS.23-80) Scope This specification prescribes requirements for the clas- sification of low alloy steel electrodes (both solid and composite) and fluxes for submerged arc welding. Note: The values stated in U.S. customary units are to be regarded as the standard. The SI units are given as equivalent values 10 the US. customary units, The standard sizes and dimensions in the two systems are not identi- cal, and, for this reason, conversion from a standard size or dimension in one system will not always coincide with a standard size or dimension in the other. Suitable conversions, encompassing standard sizes of bath, can be ‘made, however, if appropriate tolerances are ‘applied in each case. Part A General Requirements 1. Classification The classification system used in this specification is described in Fig, 1 1. AWS A5.O1, Filler Metal Procurement Guidelines, to- gether with the necessary information from this specifica tion, may be used as a procurement document. The tests in this specification are intended for product classification purposes. Tests nat called for herein may be required for Certain applications of the products classified in this specification. AWS AS.O1 provides a mechanism by which a purchaser can have those or any tests he specifies conducted on the material he purchases Solid electrodes are classified on the basis of their chemical composition, and composite electrodes are clas: sified on the basis of their weld metal composition, as described in Part B. Designations for solid electrodes are given in Table 1. Designations for composite electrodes are obtained as described in footnote d to Table 2. Fluxes are classified on the basis of the chemical com. position and mechanical properties of the weld metal they deposit with some particular classification of elec trode, a8 described in Part C. The conditions under which the weld metal is to be deposited and the tests conducted ‘are given in Part D. Designations for fluxes are obtained as described in Tables 7 and 8. 2. Manufacture ‘The electrodes and fluxes may be made by any method that will yield products conforming to the requirements, of this specification, 3. Acceptance [At the option and expense of the purchaser, any or ai ofthe tet requitemens of this specification may be Ged atthe bas for acceptance of any product covered by this specification, 4. Certification For all material furnished under this specification, the ‘manufacturer certifies (by affixing the marking required in 5, Marking) that the material, or representative material, has passed the tests required for classification by this specification. When required by the purchaser, the manufacturer shall furnish a copy of the results of those tests, 359 SFAS.23 1989 SECTION 11 Inceates thax J iniates tne mina tena rent in increments of 12000 ox [69 MPL) of wed mel with the fax and some specie Clatsifeation of electrode deposited according to the welding conditions soeitied herein Two dips are used far weld metal of 100,000 1680 MPa tensile strength and higher (see Table 7 Designates the condition of heat treatment in which the tests were conducted: “A for aselded and "P for postweld Nest tweated. Read and understand this label. FUMES AND GASES can be dangerous to your health. ARC RAYS can injure eyes and burn skin, ELECTRIC SHOCK can kill. * Read and understand the manufacturer's instruc- tions and your employer's safety practices. + Keep your head out of the fumes, * Use enough ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and the general area + Wear correct eye, ear, and body protection. + Do not touch live electrical parts. See American National Standard Z49.1, Safety in Welding and Cutting, published by the American Welding Society, 2501 N.W. 7th Street, Miami, Florida 33125; OSHA Safety and Health Standards, 29 CFR 1910, available from U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402 Do Not Remove This Label 6. Packaging 6.1 Electrodes and flux shall be suitably packaged to censure against damage during shipment and storage, under normal conditions 6.2 Flux, in its original unopened container, shall with stand storage under normal conditions for at least six months without damage to its welding characteristics or the properties of the weld. Heating of the flux to assure ryness may be necessary when the very best properties (of which the materials are capable) are required. 6.3 Standard package sizes and weights for electrodes are sven in Part B. Package sizes and weights other than those specified in Part B may be supplied upon agreement between purchaser and supplier. Package sizes and weights for fluxes shall be as agreed between purchaser and supplier 7. Rounding-off Procedures For purposes of determining conformance with this specification, an observed or calculated value shall be rounded to the nearest 1,000 psi for tensile and yield strength and to the “nearest unit" in the last righthand place of figures used in expressing the limiting value for other quantities in accordance with the roundingoff method given in ASTM E29, Recommended Practice for 361 SFA5.23 Indicating Which Places of Figures are to be Considered Significant in Specified Limiting Values. 8. Retests If any test fails to meet its requirement, that test shall be repeated twice. The results of both retests shall meet the requirements prescribed for the particular test, Speci: mens for retest may be taken from the original test as sembly or from one or two new test assemblies, Part B Electrodes 9. Chemical Composition 9.1 The chemical composition of solid electrodes shall be as specified in Table | 9.2 The chemical composition of the weld metal from composite electrodes shall be as specified in Table 2. The sample on which the analysis is conducted is taken from the weld metal used in classifying the particular flux (or fluxes) with which the composite electrode is 10 be used, as described in Part C. 10. Standard Sizes Standard electrode sizes are given in Table 3. 11. Finish and Temper 11.1 Finish, Electrodes shall have a smooth finish, free from slivers, depressions, seams (except composite elee- trodes), laps (except composite electrodes), scratches, scale, or other foreign material that would adversely affect the welding characteristics of the electrode or the opera tion of the equipment. Copper may be used as a protective coating for all clas sifications except those that carry the suffix “N" (nuclear) in their designation. Any coating applied to the “N” electrodes must not contain sulfur, phosphorus, vanadium, or copper. Suitable protective coatings other than copper may be applied to any electrode in this specification 11.2 Temper. The temper of the electrodes shall be such that the electrodes will feed in an uninterrupted man- ner in automatic and semiautomatic welding equipment. 2 ASTM Standards can be obtained from the American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103,
