Professional Dispositions Statement

Teaching is more than planning, instructional strategies, and teaching skills. It is also

about integrating professional dispositions. Professional dispositions are values and ethics a

teacher possess and displays through their actions in the classroom. Teachers who possess these

professional dispositions are able to be a role model and great example to the profession.

As I continue my journey as a teacher, there will always be opportunities to improve my

teaching skills, but there are a few professional dispositions that I currently display. As an

educator, I set high expectations for my students because I believe that all students are capable of

learning given the right instruction. I am sure to set realistic expectations and communicate with

my students. I treat all my students with fairness. I promote equity in my classroom amongst my

students and I make sure that my students feel as if they are being treated the same and given the

same opportunities. I give my students a warm and comfortable environment, and we work as

team. When it comes to assessments, all students receive the same questions, and are graded on

the same grading scale.

Curiosity is another disposition that I possess. In the classroom, I like to do more than

instructing, I like to help students reach their maximum potential. I do this by encouraging

students to think beyond the norm. I ask questions and push students to think critically. I want

my students to receive the best education, so I am sure to create opportunities for them to be

hands on in their learning.

My self-assessment supports my professional dispositions statement in various ways. The

assessment shows my strong belief in optimizing student learning, believing that all students can

learn, and that the classroom environment created affects students’ learning and development.

The steps I will take to improve are to seek and accept feedback from my superiors, attend

professional development workshops, and reflect on my practices to help me grow in my

profession.

Throughout my education program, I have grown in so many ways in my professional

dispositions. I have become more aware of the diversity of students. I have gotten to know most

of the students, which allows me to be more cautious and respect diversity when it comes to

planning lessons. I have grown in my professional conduct by being a positive role model in

front of students. I have also learned how to display ethical behavior always. At first, I thought

that I had to treat students differently based on their academic needs, but I now treat all students

with fairness and set the same high expectations, realistic, for all students.
