Title: US Sending Central American Migrant Minors Back to Mexico

Source: https://www.voanews.com/a/us-sending-central-american-migrant-minors-back-to-
mexico-/4804003.html , 2/25/19

Summary:
 What- The head of Mexico's immigration agency says the country has received 112
Central American migrants from the United States, including 25 minors in a policy
reversal. Last month, the U.S. launched the so-called “remain in Mexico” program
negotiated with Mexico to make some asylum applicants wait in Mexico during the
months and even years that it can take to resolve such cases. The U.S. has expressed
interest in expanding the program to other ports of entry along the border, but so far it
remains limited to Tijuana. National Immigration Institute Commissioner Tonatiuh
Guillen believes the program's expansion would draw more legal challenges in the U.S.
alleging that it violates the due process of the asylum seekers or puts them in danger.
 Why- I found this article interesting especially because personally, I didn’t even know
that the U.S. launched the “remain in Mexico” program. We have heard a lot about
‘building a wall’ but I didn’t know of much as going on at the border. Although I do not
know much about the situation, I think it is interesting the legal implications of possibly
expanding this program. The United States wants to keep its boarders safe and secure, but
at what cost are we willing to do this? I have mentioned this before, but I always find it
interesting that we focus so much energy on keeping people out rather than helping aid
the countries. I read a very interesting opinion article on this:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/25/opinion/trump-central-america.html. However, we
talked a bit in class about how much Americans have “invaded and ruined” Central
America and how many Central Americans blame the United States and see them as the
enemy.
