Introduction We have seen many accidents in our locality. In most of the cases, when the person riding in a bike falls down, a long time gap is there between the time at which he gets injured and the time at which he is taken to the hospital. This time gap, though a matter of mere minutes, make the difference between whether person lives or dies. Even a few seconds can prove crucial in saving a life. Generally, the time delay is due to the following:- 1) The injured person needs to be noticed. 2)Someone needs to come to the help of the person. 3)An ambulance needs to be called. 4)The ambulance may take quite a while to arrive at the accident location. Hence there is a need for a speedy system by which the ambulance can get to know the location of the accident almost immediately after the accident has taken place. Our Idea Our idea involves designing a helmet which can inform the nearest ambulance about the location at which the accident has taken place almost immediately after the accident has taken place. The helmet has impact sensors that measure the impact of the crash. There is a system in the helmet which consists of a GPS tracker and switch. When the impact is more than a set limit, the GPS tracker gets turned on by the switch. The location of this helmet is shown to the nearest few ambulances. This ensures that a speedy response is possible. Aim The aim of our project is to provide a speedy response in case of accidents. This provides medical help to the injured person at the earliest so that it is possible to save more lives. Components of our idea A normal helmet, impact sensor(s), GPS tracker along and a switch. Principle involved The impact sensor measures impact of the bike accident. The GPS tracker is turned on by the switch if the accident’s impact is more than a set limit and broad casts the location of the injured person to the nearest few ambulances. Impact sensor Shock and impact sensors are used to detect and record shock or impact to a product or package. Shock sensors represent a subtype of inertial sensors, which includes accelerometers and vibration sensors. In fact, accelerometers can be and often are designed to measure shock as well as proper acceleration. Shock and impact sensors are designed to detect instances of sudden impact or severe vibration in order to output a value or, in the case of impact switch, activate or deactivate a circuit or device. Here, in the helmet, the sensor will show record of the amount of shock on impact and also intimates the nearest ambulance. GPS tracker A GPS tracking unit is a navigation device normally carried by a moving vehicle or person that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to track the device's movements and determine its location. The recorded location data can either be stored within the tracking unit or transmitted to an Internet-connected device using the cellular (GPRS or SMS), radio, or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when analyzing the track later using a GPS tracking software. Data tracking software is available for smart phones with GPS capability. In the helmet, the GPS tracker shares the location of the injured person to the nearby ambulances. Switch The switch is connected to the GPS tracker and the impact sensor. If the impact is more than the set level, then the impact sensor causes the switch to turn on the GPS tracker. Working Suppose the person riding the bike is suddenly hit by another vehicle or crashes into an area. The impact sensor in the helmet worn by the person immediately measures the impact due to the crash and compares it to a set level of impact. If the impact is more than the set limit, then the impact sensor causes the switch to turn on the GPS tracker. The GPS tracker immediately shares the location of the injured person. A system in all ambulances operating in nearby areas displays the location of this person. The ambulance can then reach the location on time. All the above take place in a matter of a few seconds, so that medical help is available at the earliest to the injured person. Benefits of our helmet 1)It can be made available to almost everyone. 2)It will be cheap and economical. 3)It will help in saving many lives. 4)It will be convenient to use as the rider simply needs to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle. 5)It reinforces the importance of wearing helmets and more people wear helmets as a consequence of this. 6)Ambulances get to know the location of people injured in accidents faster. 7)Ambulances get intimated only about the priority cases as the impact sensor has a minimum limit. Only if the impact is above the limit, the ambulances are intimated about the location. Hence they get to focus their attention on cases where the person is injured to a great extent. 8)The system inside helmets is well protected and will not be damaged to a great extent even in violent accidents. 9)The system in ambulance is very convenient and easy to use and does not require any specialized knowledge to be operated. Scope:- The same concept can be used in all helmets-cycle helmets and other helmets worn when doing any other dangerous activity. A similar concept can be used to measure impact of a car crashing, by measuring the force felt on the seat belt, when worn by the person. If the force is very high, then the GPS tracker is turned on by the switch, which immediately shares the location of the injured person with the nearby ambulances. Conclusion:- The helmet with impact sensor will be really useful to the people. It will help in saving thousands of people who die every year due to high time gap between the time at which the person gets injured and the time at which medical help is available to them. It will be really useful in a country like India where accidents are a major cause of death of the people. If implemented, it has the potential to become a major life saver. Ambulances can also easily get to know the location of injured persons so that they can reach there in time and provide speedy medical help to the people injured in accidents. The extension to car seat belts and other forms of helmets will help in saving more people. Thus the innovation will prove extremely useful to people as a major life saver.
