Summary

This study aims to determine the perceived effects of single parenting

in school performance of pupils in Lian Central School as basis for a

proposed action plan. The respondents of the study were 35 grade six pupils.

The method used in the study is descriptive method of research. The study

concluded that (1) Most of the respondents were on their age requirement

for grade 6 level of education. Most of them were female. Most of the

respondents still had average academic grade in school despite having

single parent. However, there were some who had low performance due to

less supervision of parents. (2) Most of the respondents moderately agreed

on the perceived effects of single parenting as to achievement, participation

in school activities and school discipline. (3) There was no

x
significant relationship in the responses of the respondents regarding the

perceived of single parenting when grouped according to their profile

variables. (4) An action plan designed by the researcher to enhance the

Performance of the pupils with single parent. The following recommendations

were offered by the researcher such as (1) pupils with single parent should

be treated with utmost love and care regardless of their age and gender. (2)

Parents should support their pupils in participating school activities thus,

schools should conduct more activities that will enhance parental

involvement. (3)Teachers should provide the pupil-respondents activities to

be done at home that will encourage high level of parental participation. They

should also encourage parents to have maximum participation in Parent-

Teacher Conferences .Parents should apportion their time in such a way that

they would be able to aid their children in doing their homework, guide them

on becoming academically successful, visit their children’s school to finding

out their performance in class as well as provide them with all the materials

they required for their studies. (4) Implementation of the proposed action

plan is highly recommended. Schools must continue its program for children

from single-parent homes, or may adopt programs that will help these single-

parent children to overcome their problems and improve their school

performance.
