Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to examine a controversial issue, whether political or
publicly debated women's health, obstetric, or neonatal, and present both sides equally.

Student Approach to Assignment

This assignment required the student to choose a controversial topic in the field of
obstetrics and display both sides of the argument equally and without bias. The topic I chose was
assisted pregnancy through the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and the risks and
benefits of having a child this way. In the paper, I go into detail on both the pros and cons of
conception using ART.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio

I chose this assignment for my portfolio because it showcases my ability to illustrate two
opposing views while using an ethical framework to argue about the conception of a fetus
through ART. This paper also portrays a non-biased approach regarding the issue of conception
and my understanding of how to provide nursing care to patients without applying personal bias.

 Professionalism
 Demonstrates accountability for one's own professional practice
 Example: As nurses are accountable for providing patients with information without
omission based on personal bias, I reviewed both sides of an ethical issue such as this
one where the pros and cons of using ART to conceive a child is explored. In this
paper, I stated that nurses are responsible for helping patients resolve problems such
as this by educating them on all aspects of ART so that they have informed decision-
making.
