A BREATHING SYSTEM

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
BRAINSTORMING

• What do you know about the

respiratory system?
• Can you list any part of the
respiratory system?
YOU RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

• We use our lungs to breathe.

• We breathe in (INHALE) and we breathe out

(EXHALE) many times a day.
YOUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

• Why do we breathe in and out? Why do we

inhale and exhale?

• What do inhaling and exhaling have to do with

the health of our body?

• Are our lungs the only parts of our body involved

in breathing?

INHALING
• How does oxygen in the air travel
from outside the body to the cells
inside the body?
INHALING
• 1. When a person breathes in, the air enters the
nasal passages
2. Air travels through the throat to the trachea
3.The trachea divides into two tubes called
bronchial tubes
4. The bronchial tubes lead to the lungs.
5. In the lungs, the bronchial tubes divide many
times into smaller branches called bronchioles
INHALING
• 6. At the end of the tiny branches are air sacs. It
is here that oxygen in the air passes to the blood
that is inside the capillaries. The blood carries
the oxygen to the heart, which then pumps the
blood with oxygen around the body
INHALING
• 7. The diaphragm is a thick sheet of smooth
muscle at the bottom of the chest cavity. It
moves down when a person inhales. It moves up
when a person exhales
INHALING
• What happens to you breathing when
you exercise?
INHALING
• When you exercise or do an activity that requires
extra energy, your muscles need more oxygen
the usual. As a result, your respiratory system
must work harder and faster to get more oxygen
into the blood so that the blood can carry the
oxygen to your muscles
EXHALING
• The respiratory system also is important
because of what happens when you exhale.

• Carbon dioxide is a waste product that is made

by cells when they turn sugars into energy to
keep the cells alive.

• The cells must get rid of the carbon dioxide,

which becomes a poison to the body, if the body
has too niche of it at one time
EXHALING
• When the blood cells absorb oxygen from the air
in the air sacs (alveoli), they also give up the
carbon dioxide waste that the blood cells
collected from other body cells.

• The air you exhale, therefore, has less oxygen

and more carbon dioxide in it than the air you
inhale.
ACTIVITIES
• Write the correct sentences
1. When we breathe in , the diaphragm contracts/
relaxes
2. When we breathe out, the diaphragm contracts/
relaxes

trachea/nasal passages

5. Breathe on means inhale/exhale
