AN ANALYSIS OF ME April 10, 2019

OGL482
Janice Lawhorn
INTRODUCTION
For this research assignment I have compiled data and evidence from several
different sources found during this class, and from previous semesters. The research
focuses on my personal journey as a leader and themes that relate to different self
assessments I have completed throughout my academic career. Using these
assessments as data will help me to analyze the type of leader I am, and who I want
to become in the future. Methods used to compile my data include:
•Compiling self assessments from this class.
•Retrieving old self assessments from classes prior.
•Researching new assessments that relate to leadership.
MY DATA SOURCES
RESEARCH PROCESS AND METHODS USED
BELOW IS A LIST OF THE DIFFERENT RESOURCES USED AND HOW I COMPIL ED THEM.

Three Questions (3Q) AzCIS Assessments (including the

SOURCE BREAKDOWNS
Three Questions(3Q):
 These three questions are said to be the “key to vocational discernment. These questions are used to
help provide perspective on seemingly simple questions. When looked at more closely they are
capable of showing us sides of ourselves we may not have known before.

Dreams and Desires(D&D):

 This worksheet helps give perspective on what is important to me as a leader. It requires that I write
down as many dreams and desires as I can think of, and then go back and narrow it down. Crossing
off dreams and desires gives a sense of what is truly important in my life as a person and as a leader.

Values Checklist(VC):
 The values checklist gives SEVERAL pre-generated values options like “having a family, religion, arts,
independence…etc.” and makes me choose several of them as my top. Then, much like the last, I have
to narrow it down. This helps me to narrow down and understand what is truly important to me, and
what values are more important than others if they had to be ranked.
SOURCE BREAKDOWNS (CONT’D.)
My Personal Narrative(MPN):
 My personal narrative was a long essay I wrote recalling most major points in my life. Recalling these points
in my life helped to me see what people and instances helped develop me as a person. It helps to see where
my values, morals, and identity come from, and how that effects me as a leader.
Career Anchor Assessment(CAA):
 This assessments helps us to define which of our needs takes the highest priority. In relation to worklife, you
work to understand a self-concept that is important and useful to you in your worklife. This is done by rating
statements on a scale of 1 to 10 and through the numbered outcomes you are given a Career Anchor
Description.
AzCIS Assessments:
 Different self assessments that help you realize what your interests are and what careers are possible with
those interests. This is done by completing different quiz type questions.
OGL Self Assessments:
 Different self assessments in regards to work ethic and work progress from different OGL classes at ASU.
My Next Steps Evaluation(MNS):
 A n evaluation from my final semester in community college. The evaluation helped me to see what steps I
needed to take to achieve my, then, career goals.
THEMES THAT DEFINE ME
THEME 1:
THE HAPPINESS AND WELLBEING OF OTHERS IS A TOP
PRIORITY
Supporting Evidence:
 I find joy and pleasure in the happiness of others. (MPN and VC).
 I am sad when others are sad. (MPN)
 I am an true extrovert. (MPN)
 In my next steps evaluation I prioritized helping others as one of my main goals for my future. (MNS)
 My top Value from the Values Checklist was affection. I function best around people, and around people I
can be personable and affectionate with (in a professional way). (VC).

Contradictory Evidence:
 I have done things to further myself that were inconvenient to others. Example, I left my last job at a time
where it was going to be hard for them to replace me because I got a much better job offer. (MNS)
Reflection:
This theme is one that has significantly impacted my life for a long time. I think that it has for the better, but other times I put others first too
often before deciding what I need in life. My happiness is almost dependent on others, which is not always a good thing.
THEME 2:
I WANT A JOB THAT ALLOWS ME TO WORK WITH A
CLOSE TEAM OF PEOPLE.
Supporting Evidence
 My top SKILLS results show that I am skilled in leading others and in teamwork. (AZ SK).
 In my career anchor my top category was managerial competence. I think this relates to me wanting,
and being good at managing groups of people (CAA)
 I feel personally fulfilled working on a team, and leading a successful team. I do not enjoy “glory” or
“failure” being put on just myself. (MPN).
 In my OGL classes prior I have taken quizzes that show I am a team player. (OGL 2).
 I have been working with/leading teams of people for the past 10 years (MNP).
 Creating good working relationships makes me happy. (MPN).

Contradictory Evidence
 I do not have any contradictory evidence. In my 10 years of work experience I have always worked in
groups of people and have never wanted to work in a different setting.
THEME 3:
I WOULD NOT CONSIDER A JOB THAT DOES NOT MAKE
AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE
Supporting Evidence
 My top SKILLS results show that I am skilled in leading
others and in teamwork. (AZ SK).
 In my career anchor my top category was managerial
competence. I think this relates to me wanting, and being
good at managing groups of people (CAA).
 I enjoy making others happy and having a positive impact
on peoples lives. (MPN).
 I believe my point in life is to spread love and happiness
(see image). (D&D)
 Customer Service is a top priority (AZ WIP).
 Helping guests has been the #1 priority at every job I
have had. (MPN)

Contradictory Evidence
 I do not have any evidence to prove against this. This is a
very important part of my personal life goals.
THEME 4:
I DO NOT STAND FOR DISCRIMINATION OR
MARGINALIZED GROUPS
Supporting Evidence
 One of my top values on my values checklist was Ethical
Practice. (VC).
 Being a woman of color I have experienced these types of
instances, and because of that, would never want it for
anyone else. (MPN).
 I scored high for dependability and integrity on the SKILLS
assessment. I consider myself an Ally to those who are
discriminated on, and I am a dependable one. (AZ SK).
 I personally like to have open and honest conversations with
people about these topics to help them understand and see
from a new perspective. (MPN).
 I have studied discrimination in school and researched it to be
able to speak fluently about it (see image). (OGL 1).

Contradictory Evidence
 There were times, when I was younger, that I did not know how
to approach the conversation in a productive way, and could
have done more to enlighten, educate, and make others
aware.
THEME 5:
I WILL BE IN A JOB POSITION THAT PAYS ME $100,000
BY THE TIME I AM 27
Supporting Evidence
 I am a very driven and motivated person who enjoys completely goals I set out for myself (MPN).
 My second highest Holland Personality Type was Enterprising. (AZ IP).
 I am someone who will work hard to move up, and work hard to get the job done no matter what.
(MPN).
 My work importance locator paired me with high income workplaces. (AZ WIL)
 Goals like this motivate me to accomplish really great things in life. (MPN).
 I will not be discouraged if I do not make this goal, it will only drive me even more. (MPN).

Contradictory Evidence
 I often get comfortable at jobs, even when they are not paying me what I should be making in that
position. I get very attached to companies and people and do not always take the steps that would
put me in the best spot financially.
THEME 6:
I ACCEPT THAT CHANGE IS A PART OF LIFE, AND
EMBRACE IT
Supporting Evidence
 One of my top skills was Decision Making. Making tough decisions often calls for change. (AZ SK).
 Having gone through several different leadership positions, I am aware of how change is good for the
development of a leader. (MPN).
 I have lead teams through different procedural and work atmosphere changes, and this also helps to
understand why change is important, and to show others why it is important. (MPN).
 The world we live in is always changing. Understanding this change and adapting with it is the only
way leaders and business can survive. (MPN).
 I scored high on Enterprising and I think that a good entrepreneur understands change in the business
world and is willing to embrace it to further his/her business. (AZ IP).

Contradictory Evidence
 There have been several instances in my life where I do not wish to adapt to a change. Example, when
I had to adjust to new changes in my job position. It was hard, and I did not agree with some of the
changes, but in the position it was something I had to do.
THEME 7:
I VALUE EDUCATION AND WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN
EVEN AFTER ASU
Supporting Evidence
 In my Next Steps evaluation from community college I wrote how learning and education was the most
important factor to being a better person. I wrote about how I wanted to graduate college and
continue to learn through companies, classes, etc. (MNS).
 One of the top 3 personality traits from the Holland personality test was Investigative. Being curious
and learning more is something I have always done. (AZ IP).
 Security and Stability were my primary anchors. I think in a ever changing world the only way to be
secure and stable in a job is if you keep learning to keep up with the times. (CAA).
 Understanding the importance of learning and education is the sign of a good leader. (MPN).
 To be able to lead and teach others, I must be educated on all things relevant to the team. Just
because I am not in school anymore does not mean I stop learning. (MPN).

Contradictory Evidence
 I am definitely taking a break from college when I graduate ASU! I enjoy school but having been in
school my whole life, I will be relieved to have some time off!
THEME 8:
CONFLICT RESOLUTION IS A PRIORITY I WISH TO
MASTER
Supporting Evidence
 In my OGL class, during the topic of conflict management I
express interest in the topic, and I have since taken more
classes on the topic (OGL1).
 In my work life I have taken to really focusing on conflict
management and ways in which I can better myself in it.
(MPN).
 Conflict is hard, and at work sometimes I do not want to deal
with it. (MPN).
 One of my top 3 skills on the SKILLS assessment was
investigative, which is important during conflict resolutions (AZ
SK).

Contradictory Evidence
 In my personal life, sometimes I deflect from conflicts to ensure
others stay happy, instead of solving the conflict. This is
something I hope to continue working on.
Reflection
Conflict resolution is an important topic that I have found has helped me
so much in everyday life. It is obviously very helpful at work, but even in
personal situations, knowing how to deal with conflict really helps me
navigate sticky situations.

THOUGH I ENJOY PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS, I WILL
ALWAYS BE A KID AT HEART
Supporting Evidence
 I enjoy doing fun things like playing outside, going to Disneyland and being silly (when appropriate).
(MPN).
 Adventure and excitement are important values to me. (VC).
 I enjoy playing with children and watching after children because it puts me in a “kid” setting. (MPN).
 I have always been creative in a childlike way. (MPN).
 Just last year I accomplished one of my biggest dreams which was to go to Disneyworld for the first
time! (D&D).
 I always have an outlet that lets me be free and feel like a kid again. Right now its Dancing. (MPN).

Contradictory Evidence
 None really. I know that at work and in professional settings I need to be strict. Sometimes I still joke
around a bit more than necessary.
THEME 10:
I AM INDEPENDENT, BUT I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF
ASKING FOR HELP
Supporting Evidence
 I often ask questions at work that are well thought out and relevant. My leaders encourage this
behavior and enjoy my honesty. (MPN).
 A sign of a good leader is knowing when to ask for help. Leadership was on my top values. (VC).
 Managerial competence is another aspect that I scored high on. I think this goes hand in hand with
knowing when to ask for help. (CAA).
 As a leader I encourage my team to ask for help when they need it, and I lead by example and do the
same thing. (MPN).
 Being honest and keeping integrity is important to me. I would not want to fail simply because I thought
I could not ask for help. (MPN).
 Learning from asking questions creates a good leader. (MPN).

Contradictory Evidence
 Sometimes my ego gets the best of me and I think I can do something on my own. This usually backfires,
and I end up needing help cleaning up my mess.
MISSION STATEMENT AND PERSONAL VISION
“My mission is to spread love and compassion wherever I go, and
encourage others to be the best they can be.” – Selena Peterson

Process Behind the Mission Statement:

 I am lucky that I have created a mission statement before. I just tweaked it a little to reflect some
newer ideas. I have known my “mission” or purpose from a young age. I seem to have always known
that spreading love onto others is what I was put on this earth to do. Reading through the guide to help
create a mission statement, it was fun to fill out the example questions to get the creative juices flowing.
This showed me even more parts of myself that I can begin to consider and possible build into a new
mission statement down the line.
SUMMARY AND CLOSING NOTES
After completing this assignment I have learned a lot about myself.
It is very interesting to see all of my traits, qualities, goals, and
achievements all laid out in front of me. It makes me very proud of
the things I have accomplished, and the goals I have set for myself.
I believe that I have worked very hard to understand myself as a
person, and as a leader. And because I have now better defined
myself I can be a better me by filling in the gaps.
