Introduction:
● My topic today will focus on Bullying and Clique behavior in high school environments.
○ I believe that there should be more programs in schools that promote inclusion
and blending of different social groups as well as increased counselor
involvement due to the fact that the presence of cliques leads to low self-esteem,
and high levels of depression in teenagers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.
Why is Bullying and Exclusive Behavior a Problem?
● Victims of bullying and clique behavior are:
○ 75% more likely to engage in activities of Self Harm
○ 30% More likely to develop a substance addiction as a coping mechanism
○ 26% More likely to begin regularly missing classes
SLE Experience
● I began my journey of investigating the rampant problem by creating a student voice. I
interviewed:
○ Students personally and through an online survey
○ Faculty and staff personally
● (Include images of graphs from survey and quotes from interviews)
What is the Solution?
● To start, CMS High Schools should incorporate programs or activities in which students
are encouraged to interact with people they usually do not.
○ Simple things such as mixing up the seating charts every few months or
encouraging people to change seats in the cafeteria can really make a difference.
● The main component needed for improvement, however, is counselor follow through and
accessibility.
○ Students need to feel comfortable accessing their counseling services and they
need to feel that the environment is a safe place for them to talk about their
feelings, emotions and problems.
○ Steps to improve the counseling services to students are:
i. Student Assemblies in which the importance of counselor services as well
as methods of counselor contact are discussed and affirmed.
ii. Student voices collectively alerting to the counseling services that help is
required and desired.
What’s Next?
● This problem is of great importance to me and as I continue my journey to higher
education to be a school counselor of high school level, I hope to be directly influencing
the student body as well as faculty and staff for the better.
Closure:
● I am fortunate to say that after completing this graduation project, I am amply equipped
with the tools and knowledge which will benefit me in my journey of improving the high
school and education experience for everyone involved. I hope to truly live by and
emphasize the slogan:
○ “Every child. Every day. For a Better Tomorrow.”
