ALL WHEEL STEER FOR

"D" SERIES BACKHOES
UPDATE

INTRODUCTION

This presentation covers the updated All Wheel Steer (AWS) System used on "D" Series
Backhoe Loaders.

AWS allows the operator increased flexibility in the control of the machine.

The AWS System features three operating modes: Two Wheel Steer, Circle Steer, and
Independent Rear Maneuvering (IRM).

Two Wheel Steer Mode controls only the front axle and is used for conventional steering and
for roading.

Circle Steer Mode permits tighter turning radiuses, while the IRM Mode allows the operator to
control the rear tires independently of the front tires. The IRM Mode allows the machine to
turn tighter radiuses than in Circle Steer Mode and allows the machine to be "crabbed."

The new valve group is more economical, lighter, and provides improved performance over the
previous valve.

The operator controls in the cab to operate the AWS control valve group have not changed.

THE PREVIOUS AWS SYSTEM

The AWS control valve group was an attachment that was plumbed in between the HMU and
the front and rear axles.

The previous AWS control valve group consisted of the IRM shutoff solenoid valve, IRM
(independent rear maneuvering) left and right solenoid valves, circle steer solenoid valve, six
pilot poppet valves, thermal relief valve, solenoid controlled lock valve, and two resolvers.

The pilot poppet valves were controlled by the circle steer solenoid valve. When the circle
steer solenoid valve was energized, the poppet valves changed their state to allow circle steer
operation.

The two IRM solenoid valves were used to control the rear axle independently of the front axle
when the IRM Mode was selected. Whenever either IRM solenoid valve was energized, the
IRM shutoff valve was energized to allow flow to the IRM solenoid valves, prior to the IRM
solenoid directing oil flow to the rear steering cylinder.
SERV7105-01 -7- NPI
Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005

For the Two Wheel Steer Mode none of the solenoids were energized.

The thermal relief valve was used to relieve the heat and pressure build up in the rear axle that
typically occurred when roading the machine. The lock valve worked with the thermal relief
valve to prevent movement in the rear axle primarily during two wheel steer operation.

The resolver sensed the load signal in the AWS System, which was sent back through the signal
network to the pump.

THE UPDATED AWS SYSTEM

The update control valve group is much simpler in design. The IRM shutoff valve, solenoid
controlled lock valve, and thermal relief valve are no longer required.

The solenoid controlled lock valve and thermal relief valve have been replaced with two line
relief valves. The line relief valves protect the rear steering cylinder and lines from external
shocks and heat build up. The line reliefs will also open during the Circle Steer Mode if the
rear steering cylinder reaches the end of its stroke prior to the front steering cylinder.

One of the resolvers has been replaced with two check valves. The two check valves serve the
same purpose of the previous resolver. The poppet valves have been replaced with simpler
check valves.

A circle steer pilot valve has been added and serves the same function as the circle steer valve
in the previous AWS system. The pilot valve is energized to direct oil to the pilot operated
check valves to unseat them when CIRCLE STEER is selected.
SERV7105-01 -9- NPI
Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005

The circle steer valve used here allows TWO WHEEL STEERING when the valve is
de-energized by allowing flow to pass between the two steering lines for the front axle.

When CIRCLE STEER is selected, the circle steer valve is energized to block the flow between
the two steering lines.

The four upper piloted operated check valves are controlled by the circle steer pilot valve.
When the pilot valve is energized, supply oil is directed to the four pilot operated check valves
to unseat them. This action connects the front steering cylinder lines with the rear steering
cylinder lines.

The two lower pilot operated check valves are unseated by supply oil to the rear steering
cylinder whenever one of the IRM solenoids are energized.

The six pilot operated checks valves provide reduced rear axle drift as compared to the
previous AWS system.

The orifice check valves in the lines to the rear axle prevent cylinder voiding.

AWS Electrical System

The new valve group also requires a new wiring harness for the AWS System.

The AWS position gauge displays the position of the rear axle relative to the centerline of the
machine. The rear steering position sensor senses the position of the rear steering cylinder and
sends a variable signal to the AWS position gauge.

The AWS mode select switch, allows the operator to choose between the three steering modes.
When TWO WHEEL STEER is selected no solenoids are energized and no AWS relays are
closed.

When CIRCLE STEER is selected, the circle steer indicator lamp turns on and at the same time
power is directed to the circle steer pilot solenoid valve and to the circle steer solenoid valve to
energize them.
SERV7105-01 - 12 - NPI
Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005

When IRM STEERING is selected, the operator presses either button for rear steer on the
loader control joystick. The independent rear steer lamp will turn on. Power is directed to the
AWS QC Relay. Depending on which steering direction is chosen for the rear axle, power is
then directed to close either the left steer relay or the right steer relay. Once one of these relays
is closed power is directed to the corresponding Right IRM or Left IRM solenoid valve to
energize the solenoid.

The pressure switch is used to sense low hydraulic pressure in the supply line to the HMU
during CIRCLE STEER. When low pressure is sensed, power to the circle steer pilot solenoid
valve and to the circle steer solenoid valve is stopped, which causes the two solenoids to
de-energize. The machine reverts to TWO WHEEL STEER.

Two Wheel Steer Mode

For the Two Wheel Steer Mode, no solenoids are energized for the AWS System. When the
operator turns the steering wheel for a right turn, the priority valve shifts to direct pump supply
oil to the HMU. A signal is sent to the pump from the priority valve to cause the pump to
increase flow. Flow from the HMU is directed to the AWS control valve group, where the oil is
blocked from flowing to the rear axle steering cylinder. The supply oil flows through the circle
steer valve into the other steering line.

Oil from the AWS control valve group flows to the left side of the front steering cylinder to turn
the tires on the front axle to the right. Return oil flows from the right side of the front steering
cylinder flows back to the HMU and is directed back to the tank.

For a left turn, the oil flows first to the right side of the front steering cylinder to turn the tires
on the front axle to the left and return oil from the left side of the front steering cylinder flows
to the AWS control valve group and then to the HMU on the way back to the tank.

Circle Steer Mode

For the Circle Steer Mode, both the circle steer pilot valve and the circle steer valve are
energized for the AWS System. When the circle steer pilot valve is energized supply oil is
directed to the upper pilot operated check valves and shifts them to the open position. This
action will connect the lines to the front steering cylinder to the rear steering cylinder lines. At
the same time, the circle valve shifts to block the passage between the two front cylinder lines.

When the operator turns the steering wheel for a right turn, the priority valve shifts to direct
pump supply oil to the HMU. A signal is sent to the pump from the priority valve to cause the
pump to increase flow.

For a right turn, flow from the HMU is directed to the AWS control valve group, where the oil
flows to the right side of the rear axle steering cylinder to turn the tires on the front axle to the
right. Return oil from the left side of the rear steering cylinder, flows back through the AWS
control valve group to the left side of the front steering cylinder to turn the tires on the front
axle to the right. Return oil from the right side of the front steering cylinder flows back to the
HMU and is directed back to the tank.
SERV7105-01 - 15 - NPI
Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005

The pressure switch will sense the pressure in the supply line to the HMU. If the pressure falls
below a certain point, the switch will open and the machine will revert to the Two Wheel Steer
Mode.

For a left turn, the oil flows first to the right side of the front steering cylinder. Exhaust oil
from the left side of the front cylinder flows to the AWS control valve group and then to the
left side of the rear steering cylinder. Return oil for the right side of the AWS control valve
group flows to the AWS control valve group and then to the HMU on the way back to the tank.

Independent Rear Maneuvering Steer Mode

For the Independent Rear Maneuvering Steer Mode, either the IRM left solenoid or the IRM
right solenoid is energized to shift the spool to direct supply oil to the rear steering cylinder.

When the operator presses the button on the loader joystick for a left turn of the rear cylinder,
the IRM left solenoid is energized and shifts the spool to direct direct pump supply oil to the
lower pilot operated check valves. Both pilot operated lower check valves unseat and supply
oil flows to the right side of the rear steering cylinder to shift to turn the tires on the rear axle to
the right. A signal is sent to the pump from the lower check valve to the resolver to cause the
pump to increase flow.

Return oil flows from the left side of the front steering cylinder flows back through the
unseated pilot operated check valve on the lower left and is directed back to the tank through
the IRM control spool.

When the IRM right solenoid is energized for a right turn for the rear axle, the oil flow is the
reverse as described above for a left turn.
SERV7105-01 - 17 - NPI
Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005

In the IRM Steer Mode, the rear axle operates independently of the from axle. The front axle
can be operated at the same time the rear axle is being controlled independently.

The IRM Steer Mode allows for the most creative control of the machine when steering. The
machine can even be "crabbed" much like a motor grader.

The IRM Steer Mode also allows for improved controllability of the machine when the front
tires are off of the ground. The machine can make powered turns by steering with the rear axle
only.
