Philosophy Of Education

I believe it it important for children to have both flexibility and a core curriculum at

school. There are certain things that students must learn in order to be successful in this world,

but it is also important that they don’t get so into the routine of something that they end up only

going through the motions. This is why I believe a good teaching philosophy combination for

children would be progressivism and essentialism.

Essentialism is important in a classroom, because it focuses in on the essential

information needed to pass classes, pass standardized test, and also have an accurate worldview.

Understanding social studies, math, literature, and science will help the children throughout their

school years by giving them the information necessary to pass assessments. These subjects will

also help students as they venture out into the world and into their occupation. This approach

will also help students understand the importance of discipline in the classroom and also in their

lives.

Although discipline is important, it is also easy to go through the motions, especially in a

classroom. This is why I believe that a progressivism approach is also necessary. Giving kids the

opportunity to learn hands on will help them see how they can apply what they learn in school to

the real world. When children go on field trips, or have the opportunity to participate in an

activity that helps them learn by doing, it helps them to stay engaged. Active learning like this

also helps the children to remember things better. The philosophy of progressivism also aids

students in formulating meaningful questions in which the answers can be found, not in

textbooks, but in real-world experiences.

Combining these two philosophies allows for the perfect balance of discipline and

flexibility, and also core courses and hands on learning for real-world experiences. This balance

will help students to learn the information necessary and allow them to better understand how

this can relate to the world.
