The introduction of FLOW-i

As a provider of anesthesia machines, MAQUET was per-
ceived as the “new kid on the block” and the hospital staff
was initially somewhat skeptical about trying out the new
FLOW-i machine. It did not however take long to convince
the team of FLOW-i’s performance capabilities. The suc-
cessful training and stepwise introduction of daily use of the
FLOW-i machine also made the transition from old to new
technology very smooth.

As longstanding users of the SERVO-i® ICU ventilator, the

staff found that the similarity between the two machines’
graphical user interfaces contributed greatly to the success-
ful introduction of the new technology. The users felt quickly
familiar with the new device and became very in Dr. Filadelfo Bustos Molina, MD, PhD, has been an anesthesiologist for 20 years. He

The Hospital Virgen de la Salud had decided to mount the
machine off the r on a ceiling pendant – a familiar concept
to the staff since they also use their SERVO-i ventilators inte-
grated in a ceiling supply unit in the postoperative care area.

FLOW-i not only for high-demand patients
The hospital has multiple specialties and treats patients
whose sizes, ages and illnesses vary. Today FLOW-i has
been used at the hospital on patients weighing from
500 grams to over 150 kilograms. Since FLOW-i is located
in the OR which is scheduled for urological, vascular and
general surgery, the variety of patients and patient needs
is huge. Laparoscopic surgery is increasing and with it the
demand on the anesthesia machine to be able to deliver
high-quality ventilation when abdominal pressure is high.
With FLOW-i, there has been a shift in ventilation modes
used during anesthesia towards greater use of Pressure
Control and Pressure Support. According to Dr. Bustos, the
excellent performance of FLOW-i during Pressure Control
has contributed to less use of muscle relaxants, since the
machine is so responsive to the patients’ respiratory needs.
To quote Dr. Bustos, “patients with very high resistance
are not a problem for FLOW-i at all”, and he prefers to use
FLOW-i over their other machines when he has morbidly
obese patients. The low flow possibilities with FLOW-i and
the very reliable electronic vaporizers are further reasons to
choose FLOW-i.
Dr. Bustos is very pleased and satisfied with his decision to
choose FLOW-i and his staff members appreciate its ease
of use after minimal training. All in all, Dr. Bustos maintains
that he would make the same decision today as he made
then, summing it up as follows: “FLOW-i has the answer to
any respiratory demand”.
