The U.S. Census Bureau released population estimates at the county level on April 18, 2019. The release
contained population data from 2010 to 2018.
The data include total county population and the components of population changes, but no details by age, sex,
and race are available at this time.
Components of change
The average number of births in the state was 18,456 per year, and the average number of deaths was 11,029
per year. The result was an average natural increase of 7,427 persons per year between July 1, 2010 and July 1,
2018.
There was an average of 6,633 net in-migrants coming to the state from foreign counties during this same time
period, and there was an average of 6,905 net out-migrants leaving the state for the U.S. mainland. The result
was an average net loss of 272 people a year from migration between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2018
Births by county
The City and County of Honolulu accounted for 71.7% of births in the state between July 1, 2010 and July 1,
2018. Hawaii County accounted for 12.9%; Maui County accounted for 10.6%; and Kauai County accounted for
4.7% between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2018.
Deaths by county
The City and County of Honolulu accounted for 69.1% of deaths in the state between July 1, 2010 and July 1,
2018. Hawaii County accounted for 15.1%; Maui County accounted for 10.5%; and Kauai County accounted for
5.3% between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2018.
