In this interactive white board activity, the children will interact with the board to
identify literary themes outside of text and learn analysis skills through effective note

Activity The students will be exploring themes of literature that relate to

a historical culture and reflect on the values and ideas important
to that culture. The teacher will run through a series of
exercises to help students learn effective note taking while
learning about external themes in Beowulf.

The teacher will post a lengthy summary of Beowulf on the

smart board. The summary will detail the internal and external
themes related to the literature. The teacher will then divide
the class into groups. One person from each group will come to
the board and circle or highlight the most important pieces of
information from the summary (there will be enough
information for every group to make a notation and explain why
they feel that information is important). From this, the students
get an idea of what is being illustrated in the broader scheme of
the text as well as show their peers how they take effective
notes.

In a following slide, the teacher will post additional information

or questions about the story and ask each group to come to the
board and write three ideas that relate to questions posted on
the smart board and why. Condensing the information will be

required to show how they decided to show the most important

parts of the answer in their notes (abbreviations, keywords, etc).
 At the end of this activity, the students will then take an
assessment quiz. The students, with their groups, will create a
question to ask another group in the class. They will ask another
group to come up to the smart board and answer the question
on the smart board and explain why they decided on that
answer.
