APPLICATION FOR ECREA 2019 SUMMER SCHOOL GRANT
15. Please provide a brief statement of purpose (max. 500 words), specifying your
personal situation and reasons for applying to for the Summer School grant.
My name is Laryssa Tarachucky and I'm a PhD student from Federal University of Santa
Catarina, Brazil (Knowledge Engeneering and Management Department). I hold a bachelor
degree in architecture and urban planning and a master degree also from Federal University
of Santa Catarina, where I was a member of the research group of design programme.
I've been working on a research about urban media for the past three years and I am
interested in how the increasing use of mobile phones has made it possible new ways of
mapping urban issues (such as citizen science and participatory sensing), enabling richer
perspectives on the urban fabric and on community needs. My PhD research involves
designing a conceptual framework aiming to foster citizen involvement in urban interaction
design in small cities from Brazil by focusing on participatory practices for the development
of location-based applications oriented to tackle urban issues.
I am in my final year of studies and I believe that attending the summer school will help me
to improve the material developed so far, as well as perceive possible improvement needs
and any gaps. Moreover, although my skills are concentrated in the abovementioned areas,
my curiosity is not limited to these topics. I hope this experience can help me to develop
expertise in other related areas, such as the research topics discussed inside ECREA “Media
& The City” Temporary Working Group, and the topics related to Digital Culture and
Communication Thematic Section as well as Communication and Democracy Thematic
Section.
After years of investing in education, research funding opportunities in Brazil have fallen
dramatically in the past two years. My program, for example, offers a very limited amount
of money for participation in events that, in addition to the other limitations to the research
itself, undermines the necessary exchanges to the evolution of knowledge. No funding is
offered to summer school events or doctoral colloquium format.
Finally, considering the travel costs from Brazil to Estonia and the limited conditions and
opportunities my course offers to participate in this kind of events, I aim to gain the ECREA
Summer School Grant as this is the only manner I can attend to it. I also hope I can make a
significant and purposeful contribution to the summer school community.
