MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION

Concepts, Theories, Principles, and Teachers Competencies

“Both assessment and evaluation are based on the judgement of

an experienced, thoughtful human being - an expert. Machines
don’t assess, papers don’t assess, tests don’t assess. Human
assess. And what better person is there to assess the progress
and development of his or her students than the classroom
teacher”
-Larry Malone It’s
tasteless. It
lacks spices.

Teachers do assess, and we must be very careful
about it. Assessment and evaluation are two distinctive
processes that we, teachers, must have to understand
because it’s the future of our students that counts.
It is true that assessment drives student’s learning. Why?
Because I will not be motivated to study the lessons or even
have an advance reading if our instructors will not give
examinations the next day. Considering our curriculum, some
instructors are into traditional way of assessing students, but
some focus on assessing and evaluating us with how we should
execute the needed skills. But since we learn differently, we are
responsible for our own learning (Goel, 2011) no matter what
perspective the teacher used in assessing students.

The Need for Authentic Assessment

Assessment is authentic
Acquired when we directly examine student
Knowldege performance on worthy intellectual
and Skills
tasks (Wiggins, 1990). Some
Authentic educational institutions have seen
Assess the need for real world application
ment of what has been taught to their
students. This must be done for
Demons learning to be more concrete (just
tration like when I was in third year high
school, our chemistry teacher tests
our ability to do some experiments).

In the future, if I am already a teacher, I will frequently use

authentic assessment because according to Nast, 2015, authentic
assessment provides multiple paths to demonstration which means my
students will be able to express their learning in different ways.
However, I might find difficulty in evaluating my students using this
because some criteria are not measurable. For instance, I want to
evaluate my students on writing essay, students has different ways and
techniques on writing it.
